The Castle to River Run takes place in the historic Hudson Valley. The 1/2 marathon race takes you through the beautiful Hudson Highlands State Park and down to the Hudson River. The 5K race follows part of Benedict Arnold's escape path down to the Hudson River and back to the recreation center. The 50k races takes you both through the Hudson Highlands State Park and Benedict Arnold's escape path. Our kids 1-mile takes place right on the recreation center grounds and enjoys the beautiful fall foliage and picturesque views. Runner check-in opens at 6:30am. 50k starts at 8:00am. 1/2 Marathon starts at 9:00am. 5K starts at 9:30am. Kids race begins at 11:30am.
***Please note that unlike past years, we were not granted permission to run past the Castle itself. The good news you'll still be on some beautiful trails in the Hudson Highlands at peak foliage season.***
The 50k has an 8.5 hour time limit, meaning you need to finish by 4:30 pm. This is about a 16-17 min / mile pace. This cut-off allows for runners to finish the race by dusk.
To ensure all runners complete the race by this time, there will be cut-offs at the 4th and 6th Aid Station (these are at the same location).
Runners must be through the 4th Aid Station by 1:45 pm (mile 18.5) and the 6th Aid Station by 3:45 pm (mile 24.5). If you come in after these times, you'll be pulled from the course.
If you think you'll need more than 8.5 hours to complete the 50k, we're allowing an early start at 7 am. Also keep in mind you'll be on your own the first hour-plus. Aid Stations and Field Marshals may not be ready - so please plan accordingly. Know the course and bring some fuel and hydration.
There is not a cut-off time for the half marathon
The 50k and 1/2 Marathon courses are a mix of single track, double track, dirt road, and a few paved sections thrown in for good measure. The single and double track trails are mostly mildly technical with some longer stretches of more challenging technical terrain mixed in. The course rolls with a few big hills here and there. The bulk of the course is runnable.
For those who ran the 2019 March race, the courses will be slightly different but with a similar mix of loops.
The 5k loop is flattish with a couple of hills to keep you honest. It's mostly dirt single track that is runnable and not too technical.
Due to the course crossing private property, we won't be providing a map ahead of the race; however, you can view the elevation profiles for each race in the race photos.
***Please note that if you head out onto the trails for a training run, you must follow the signs and stay off the Castle property. This is an insurance and liability issue. While we won't be going past the Castle for this year's race, we hope we'll be allowed to use it for future races. But we must stay off it in all other cases. Thanks for understanding.***
