2019 Event Update

From our family to yours: whether you have ran, walked, donated, supported, cheered, volunteered or just showed up to support and enjoy those delicious monster cookies! We say thank you!

We've been running strong for the past six years and share with you the following update regarding the 5k event for this year:

Dear friends,

Thanks to your support and participation over the last 6 years, our Paint the Town Black 5K Event has raised over $95,000 to help in the research and awareness of Melanoma Cancer!!!

With these funds, the University of Michigan Cancer Research Center is finding new treatments and working towards a cure. We appreciate your help.

As May is Melanoma Awareness month, we would typically be starting our fundraising for our 2019 Event. But due to unforeseen circumstances, God is leading us in a different direction this year. We will not be holding our 5K Event this year, but are still working to reach our goal of $100,000 for research and we are SO close!!

Everyday we are hearing of more people battling Melanoma skin cancer and we want to continue to help. Even though we will not have our 5K Run/Walk with a day of fun for all, we are still asking for your continued support and plan to make a trip to visit Dr. Lao in August with 2019 donations in memory of Kelly VanHouten.

Again, We are honored and grateful that you have chosen to continue to run, walk, volunteer at the event itself and offer your support for Cancer research in our own state of Michigan.

If you would like to help us reach our goal of $100,000 you can send your check and support to:
Paint the Town Black 5K OR Regents of University of Michigan: 112 South Roland Street McBain, MI. 49657

Thank you for your continued support,

The Paint the Town Black for Melanoma 5k Team

About Us

In 2008, Kelly Van Houten was first diagnosed with Melanoma Skin Cancer. It was hard to believe that there was a 5 year life expectancy when we watched Kelly keep on living! He felt great and kept on working and loving life! Every 6 months brought more spots removed. In the spring of 2012, Kelly and his family learned that the Melanoma had begun to grow, metastasizing to various places throughout his body, eventually including his brain. Not giving up, Kelly fought back! Using radiation, clinical trials, and other treatments. Dr. Lao and the University of Michigan Melanoma Oncology Team worked hard to help beat the beast that was growing. Eventually, Melanoma was growing faster than treatments could work, and on April 19, 2013 Melanoma won.

Because Kelly was a painter, because the ribbon color for melanoma is black, and because we are passionate about raising awareness that Melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancer. We are holding our 6th annual PAINT THE TOWN BLACK 5K on August 4, 2018! We want everyone to be aware of the risks of the sun, of tanning, and Melanoma! We want to find a cure so that anyone with a diagnosis of Melanoma will be able to fight knowing there is HOPE. Because of the hope for a cure, all proceeds raised willbe going to help the University of Michigan Cancer Research Center, specifically Dr. Lao’s research fund to help them in their efforts to find a cure for this beast of a disease. We hope you'll join us in this race to find a cure!
