2021 REGISTRATION UPDATE 2/15/21
"The triumph can't be had without the struggle." – Wilma Rudolph
In our December 2nd email and social media update, we announced our plan to move forward as if there would be a 2021 Broken Arrow Skyrace. We left our options open, crossed our fingers, and worked hard behind the scenes to put in place the many intricate pieces that go into hosting a successful, large-scale, European-inspired event.
However, after consulting with our race medical team, as well as local, state, national, and even international public health agencies (literally) – as well as our sponsors – we have come to the conclusion that it is unlikely that we will be able to safely hold an event on the scale of the Broken Arrow Skyrace in June.
While it is an imperfect solution, we have decided to postpone the Broken Arrow Skyrace to October 1-3, 2021.
As we always say, the Broken Arrow Skyrace really is THE highlight of our year. We want nothing more than to gather our community on the rugged, high alpine trails of Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows.
However, our nation – indeed the world – remains locked in a grim struggle with this pandemic. And, perhaps because we welcome athletes from every corner of the globe to our Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows playground, we cannot ignore the fact that 2.4 million people around the world have already lost their lives to COVID-19.
Besides participant and volunteer safety – which is paramount and non-negotiable – the reality is that this fall date will (hopefully) allow us to put on the Broken Arrow "experience" that you've come to know and love. Those who have run the race before know that this is more than just a race. It’s a gathering, replete with the Trails in Motion Film Festival, how-to clinics and seminars, athlete panels, live music, tasty beverages from Sierra Nevada, the oh-so precious kid's race...and more.
The thought of a Broken Arrow Skyrace with staggered starts, no high fives, hugs, or aid stations – and no weekend events – just isn't as "Broken Arrow" as any of us would like.
With the generous support of our title sponsor, Salomon, we offered to roll over every single 2020 runner to the 2021 June event. While we hope that all registered runners will be able to join us in October, the reality is that the new date won't work for everyone. Thus, we are offering another 100% roll-over (to 2022) for anyone who is unable to join us in October.
The only thing that we ask – which is mandatory – is that you notify us via email AND that you pull yourself from your respective distance(s) on Ultrasignup BY JULY 1st, 2021. Not doing so will void this offer. Your help here assures you can race Broken Arrow in 2022, while also opening a spot for a fellow runner on the wait list.
For those of you currently on the waitlist or considering registration, our approach will remain the same, namely that your credit card information will be held, but not charged, until we are:
a) certain that we can, in fact, hold the event,
b) know the number of athletes we can safely accommodate, and
c) are certain that we can safely hold all five distances.
We would be remiss to say that, while we are confident the October dates will go according to plan, we reserve the right to cancel or postpone the race if we deem that window unfit or unsafe.
In full transparency, we realize that yet another change isn't a perfect solution, but it is the hand we've been dealt and this is OUR struggle that will ultimately lead to everyone's collective triumph!
The Broken Arrow Skyrace, "Where the Mountains Meet the Sky"
The Broken Arrow Skyrace, presented by Salomon, is a three-day, five distance event held at world-famous Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows. On October 1-3, 2021 elite and recreational participants will experience an unforgettable trail running experience “where the mountains meet the sky.” The Broken Arrow consists of four iconic distances (plus a kid's race) that showcase the beauty of Lake Tahoe, the Jewel of the Sierra Nevada.
Designed in the vein of classic European Skyraces, the Broken Arrow Skyrace represents a unique style of mountain running, characterized by off-trail scrambling on steep terrain with massive amounts of vertical gain and loss at altitude....with exposure, hand lines, a ladder and snow slopes thrown in for good measure!
The Broken Arrow Skyrace features five distances: a 52k, 26k, Vertical K, 11k and kids race. The shortest distance and the 26k are part of the World Mountain Running Association World Cup. These races are unique in California as most of the terrain is above treeline. Runners will be treated to spectacular views of Lake Tahoe’s emerald-blue waters and Squaw Valley's unmistakable high-alpine terrain. Elite and recreational participants will run and then celebrate together with first-class food, craft beer, music, films and fun activities for the whole family.
PLEASE NOTE THAT REGISTRATION OPENS AT 9AM PST ON WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 9th AND CLOSES AT 11:59PM ON FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 24th.
We're excited to welcome future Skyrunners to a fun and festive kid's event at Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows. The course will be easy and fun, and children of all ages are welcome to participate, although we ask that little ones under six years old have a parent accompanying them. The race will begin at the start line of the Vertical Kilometer, ascend a short hill, and circle back down on easy service roads through the finish line chute... all in less than one kilometer.
Registration will be available all day Friday and before the race Saturday morning. The event is $7.50 and all participants will receive a medal!
The Broken Arrow 11k is slated for Sunday, October 3rd at 930am. The price for the 11k is $75. The course is 11km in length with ~569m / 1,840 ft. of vertical. The cutoff is a generous 6 hours.
The Broken Arrow is all about community, both elite and recreational runners, and as such we want to celebrate runners of all types! While our other distances are Skyrace caliber events, the 11k is a gateway drug to those longer and harder distances. If, perhaps you are just getting into trail running or are intimidated by the other events, this is your race!
Please note that you must be 14 years of age or older to run the 11k. We allow runners under 14 to participate but they must be approved by the race directors and have a parent accompany them.
Vertical Kilometer "VK" Course:
The Broken Arrow Vertical Kilometer or "VK" is once again part of the Skyrunner USA Series and slated for Friday, October 1st at 11am. The price for the VK is $65.
The VK covers some of Squaw Valley’s most iconic terrain in a short, steep, and physically demanding sprint. From the valley floor, runners will ascend over 3,100 feet in a mere 3.1 miles to the summit of 9,000-foot Squaw Peak. In true Skyrunner fashion, the course begins on steep terrain, ascends technical off-trail talus, and finishes on an exposed ridge line. The Headwall ridge is the most iconic portion of the race, complete with stunning views of Lake Tahoe, a bolted hand line, and the infamous "Stairway to Heaven" ladder to the top of Squaw Peak.
The Vertical Kilometer course will contain steep slabs of rock, potential snow slopes, scree and exposure. This is not your average trail run...and is one you will remember forever! We also encourage hikers to join this party! You won't be disappointed by an absolutely stunning section of Squaw Valley's most extreme terrain.
Please note that you must be 14 years of age or older to run the VK. Runners under 14 must be approved by the race directors and have a parent accompany them.
The Broken Arrow 26k (16.2 miles) will be run on Sunday, October 3rd at 7am. The price for the 26k is $115. The Broken Arrow 26k covers a world-class loop that showcases some of Squaw Valley's most famous terrain. The cutoff for the 26k is 7 hours and the race starts in the heart of Squaw Valley.
From the valley floor at 6200 feet, runners will ascend more than 5,000-plus feet as they circumnavigate the heralded terrain of North America's most rugged and extreme ski resort. In true Skyrunning fashion, the course is characterized by a plethora of vertical gain over a technical and physically demanding landscape that is mostly above tree-line. Along the way, runners will be treated to the jagged terrain of KT-22, unrivaled views of the Granite Chief Wilderness, and the inspiration for the course, the Broken Arrow, as well as the most iconic portion of the race, the infamous "Stairway to Heaven" ladder to the top of Squaw Peak.
The course will contain steep slabs of rock, potential snow slopes, scree and exposure. This is not your average trail run...and one you will remember forever! Additional course description is available on our website.
Please note that you must be 16 years of age or older to run the 26K.
The Saturday, October 2nd Broken Arrow 52k (32.3 miles) is the signature distance of our three-day event and a part of the Skyrunner USA series. The price for the 52k is $175. The race begins at 7am in the heart of Squaw Valley. The cutoff for the 52k is 12.5 hours.
This iconic distance features a challenging, world-class race course that showcases Squaw Valley's most extreme and scenic terrain. From the valley floor at 6200 feet, runners will ascend more than 10,000 feet as they traverse the rugged terrain of one of North America's most iconic ski resorts. In true Skyrunning fashion, the course is characterized by loads of vertical gain and loss through technical and physically demanding terrain. Most of the course is above tree-line.
Runners will be treated to the jagged terrain of KT-22, unrivaled views of the Granite Chief Wilderness and the inspiration for the course, the Broken Arrow, and the most iconic portion of the race, the infamous "Stairway to Heaven" ladder to the top of Squaw Peak (twice!). The course will contain steep slabs of rock, potential snow slopes, scree and exposure. This is not your average trail run...and is one you will remember it forever!
After the inaugural event in 2016, many runners, including Salomon athlete Max King, called the event "the hardest event of it's type in North America." Additional course description is available on our website. Please note that you must be 16 years of age or older to run the 52k.
The 2021 Broken Arrow Syrace will have a grand overall purse with details to be announced shortly.

The race organizers reserve the ability to cancel or reroute the event due to unsafe weather. Race organizers will make the best decisions when it comes to protecting the safety of all runners. This means we reserve the right to adjust, cancel, reroute, OR reschedule as we see fit. Because the bulk of our costs come before the event occurs we will not be able to extend refunds to those who wish to cancel their registration. In the instance of biblical weather and/or a force majeure, we will assess things appropriately and fairly, to the best of our abilities.
Local time: 3:52 PM
We allow you to change your chosen race distance until September 15th, 2021. If you decide to run a longer (and more expensive) distance, you will be required to pay the difference. However, no refunds will be given if you choose to drop to a shorter (and less expensive) distance. No changes WHATSOEVER are allowed after September 15th, 2021. Please note this includes dropping down in distance from the 52k to the 26k on race weekend as it is likely both distances will be sold out.
For runners who were rolled over from the 2020 event and cannot make the new October dates, we are offering a 100% rollover to 2022. Please note that we require that you email us this notification AND pull yourself from the event on Ultrasignup.com. If you do not take these steps it will void your rollover option. Race registration is non-transferable.
For runners who registered after December 9th, 2020 and got into any distance off the wait list, race registration is non-transferable and cannot be rolled over to subsequent years, unless extenuating medical or life circumstances occur. However, we understand life can get in the way of racing. As such we are happy to offer a $50 credit towards the following year until September 1st, 2021 for the 52k and 26k ONLY. For the 11k and/or VK, we are happy to offer a $20 credit towards the following year until September 1st, 2021.
Please note that we REQUIRE that you email us your "withdrawal" from the race AND cancel your registration on Ultrasignup.com. Not doing so voids any and all rollover options. Online registration closes at 1159pm Friday, September 24th. On site registration will be available at Squaw Valley on Friday (9am-5pm), Saturday (6am-4pm) and Sunday (6am-645am). Prices for the 26k & 52k increase $30 for day-of registration and $20 for the VK and 11k.
