Fat Sass Switchback Challenge

197 Glen Avenue

Millburn, NJ 6hrs, 5K, 3hrs

This Event Took Place Sat. Jul 13, 2019

Finally, a race that isn't canceled! Rather than meeting on July 11 for the race, runners will have 2 full weeks between July 1 -15 to complete the race on their own! Keep reading for more details....

The 2020 Fat Sass Switchback Challenge logistics will be a bit different than years past, but we are still hosting this event! Runners can sign-up for a 5K (3 loops) 3 hours or 6 hours and then go out to the course anytime between Wednesday July 1 and Wednesday July 15 to complete their race. The 1 mile loop with 300 ft elevation gain starts and finishes at the Locust Grove Picnic Area off of Glen Ave in Millburn, NJ at the South Mountain Reservation. We will have trail markers out on the course for those two weeks.

As we always do for this event, we will donate the race proceeds to our charity partner, Livingston Neighbors Helping Neighbors. This amazing non-profit delivers direct financial and food support to local families who need it the most!

If you would like your results to be included on Ultra Sign Up, you need to email us a link to your GPS record for the day. Please make sure this link includes the total workout time. If you don't care about official results, you can absolutely still register and complete the race on your own and you do not have to send us your GPS record.

All 5K runners will complete the 1 mile loop 3 times. 3 HR and 6 HR runners will complete as many loops as they can in 3 or 6 hours. Remember, if you don't finish your last loop before the 3 or 6 hour timer runs out, that loop does not count! If at all possible, we recommend completing your race during the week as it will be much less crowded than the weekends. The Locust Grove Trailhead is the most popular access point to the Reservation and can get very crowded on the weekend.

***Although we will have trail markers up on the course, we strongly recommend reading this course description carefully and keeping a copy of it with you. Because the trail markers will be up for 2 weeks and it is a heavily used public park, it is possible that markers could be mistakenly (or intentionally-ugh!) removed. We also have a gpx file available for any runner who would like it! Just email us as***

The 1 mile loop has 300 ft elevation gain: 1/2 mile up the switchbacks and 1/2 mile down the steep Lenape Trail. Yup, that's right! It's the reverse of the 2019 event (same direction as the 2018 race)! Don’t expect any PRs at this race. 95% of the course is technical, rocky trails. 0.20 mi is pavement.

Start/finish at the Locus Grove Picnic Area. Begin the first Switchback trail by entering just to the left of the natural spring that is gated off. Follow the Switchbacks all the way up and then make a right on the yellow blazes Lenape Trail. You’ll reach an outlook on your right with a flag pole on your left. Bear right to go on the pavement and the turn right at the benches to stay on the road. Follow the road about .20 mile and then make a right to get back on the Lenape Trail, making another right less than .10 mi to stay on the Lenape Trail. You’ll follow this trail ALL the way to the bottom to get back to the picnic area. Note, any time this trail splits, Bear left to stay on the Lenape Trail. Here is the Strava link:

Q: Can I run with my dog?
A: Dogs are allowed at the South Mountain Reservation but need to be leashed at all times

Q: Can I sign my kids up for the Fat Sass?
A: Yes! This is a family friendly event. Be sure to register your child separately and agree to the waiver for minors. If you are running with your kids and they want their results to be included too, just let us know in the email and we'll apply your finish time/loop numbers to them as well

Q: What's the weather like in Millburn, NJ in July?
A: Blazing hot. Humid. Though based on this past winter, we may have snow flurries. Be ready for anything.

Q: I could get lost in a brown paper bag. Will the course be marked?
A: YES. We will have bright colored ribbons along the course and plenty at each of the turns. **However, because it is a public park and the course marking will be out there for 2 weeks, there is a possibility that they could be mistakenly (or intentionally ugh!) taken down. Please email us for the gpx file and/or save the course description!

Q: Speaking of directions, what’s the best address for me to use to get to the Locust Grove Picnic Area?
A: 1060 West Addison.

Q: 1060 West Addison? That's Wrigley Field.
A: Just kidding. Plug in "Millburn Public Library". The trails are right across the street.

Q: I want to sign up for the event, but I know I won't stay out there to run the entire time. Can I still sign up?
A: YES! If at any point you decide that you're finished running and you do not want to go out for another loop, all you have to do is stop!
