Overview
This trail race on St. John features beautiful views, diverse ecosystems, and challenging single track climbs and descents. The course from Cruz Bay to Coral Bay follows a renowned series of National Park trails that traverse peaks, ridges, ravines, and beaches across the entire island.
The half marathon course distance is approximately 13.6 miles with an elevation gain of 2,772 feet. The course is technically challenging with several steep sections and very rugged trails. The finish line and post-race celebration and awards ceremony will be at Skinny Legs in Coral Bay.
Registrations are non-refundable, but you may request credit toward a future race. Because of the early start, bibs must be picked up the one or more nights before (time/place TBD; rare exceptions granted with prior approval).
Running the Race
Runners MUST carry at least one water bottle and fully unsupported running is encouraged (taking no water or food). There are several transition checkpoints across roads that will have replacement water (if not unsupported). The longest segment between checkpoints is 4.5 miles (Fish + Reef Bay).
There are several public toilets along the route, including at miles 0, 2.5, 7, 9, and 11. Supporters of the racers may cheer them on at road transition points, but great care should be taken at the Reef Bay Trail Head, due to blind traffic danger in that area.
The maximum time for the half marathon will be 4.0 hours. The max time cutoff is intended to avoid taxing our volunteers or St. John Rescue in their sweep of the course. As a guide to estimating your finish time, assume it will take about 2.5 times as long as the 8 Tuff Miles road race for the Half Marathon.
Navigation of the course is the runner's responsibility so you should study it. Although some markers may be provided at a few key junctions, you should not rely on them. People go off-course ever year, for various reasons, in unexpected places, so a GPS smartwatch or phone is recommended to get you back on track.
Before registering please review the course description and make sure this race is a good match for your abilities and training goals.
- If you don’t have any trail running experience, this race is not for you.
- If you don't enjoy running on rocks and roots, this race is not for you.
- If you think your road training (alone) will be adequate, this race is not for you
Multi-Runner Relay Option
We offer a relay version of the race to suit runners who wish to enjoy the course, but run shorter distances. The Relay exchange points are the L'esperance Trail Head (4 miles) and Maho Bay (9.5 miles). Runners will tag up on the honor system. Runners are responsible for their own transportation to and from the exchange points.
One Captain will register and pay for their team on this site. Team members will sign a waiver when they pickup their bibs.
