FAT SASS SWITCHBACK CHALLENGE
Join us on July 11, 2020 for the Fat Sass Switchback Challenge! Runners can sign-up for a 5K (3 loops) 3 hours or 6 hours. The 1 mile loop with 300 ft elevation gain starts and finishes at the Locust Grove Picnic Area off of Glen Ave in Millburn, NJ at the South Mountain Reservation. We will be collecting non-perishable food donations for “Livingston Neighbors Helping Neighbors”, an awesome local non-profit that assists local families in need! The most needed items currently include: cereal, granola bars, breakfast bars, kids snacks, tuna/canned chicken, boxed milk, brown rice, tomato sauce, peanut butter, almond butter, jelly, canned fruit, toilet paper, paper towels, shampoo and conditioner. They are NOT in need of: beans, mac and cheese, pasta or canned veggies.
This is a runner and hiker friendly event. The 6 hr and the 5K will start at 9AM on Saturday July 11, 2020. Check-in for the 6 hr and 5K is from 7:30AM-8:30AM; all 6 hr and 5K runners must be checked-in by 8:30AM.
The 3 hr runners will start at 12PM. Check-in for the 3 hr runners is from 10:30AM-11:30AM; all 3 hr runners must be checked-in by 11:30AM.
For the 3 hour and 6 hour events, if the timer ends before the runner completes the loop, the loop does not count.
This is a self-supported fat-ass event! No finishers' swag, no aid stations and no whining (unless you don't see Sasquatch, then you can whine a little). We will provide water at the start/finish (but this is a cupless event, so be sure to bring a water bottle, cup or hydration pack). BYO-fuel! Sharing is caring--don't be sassy with your stash--bring extra to share with the rest of the Sassquad. If at any point you decide that you're finished running and you do not want to go out for another loop please tell a volunteer so we know that you are no longer out on the course. We will have a race clock at the start/finish. 5K runners will record their finishing time on the board. 3 hr and 6 hr runners will record loops completed every lap. **It is YOUR responsibility to update the board!** If you're caught cheating, we will smash a banana on your head, tear your bib in half and leave you to fend for yourself when Sasquatch makes his appearance at the race.
The 1 mile loop has 300 ft elevation gain: 1/2 mile up the switchbacks and 1/2 mile down the steep Lenape Trail. Yup, that's right! It's the reverse of the 2019 event (same direction as the 2018 race)! Don’t expect any PRs at this race. 96.15% of the course is technical, rocky trails. 3.85% (0.04 miles) is pavement. The course will be marked. Start/finish at the Locus Grove Picnic Area. Take the Lenape Trail all the way up until you hit the Crest Drive Pavement. Turn LEFT and run along the pavement until you get to the American Flag. Run down the rocks and turn right to stay on Lenape (yellow). Make a left to head down the switchbacks all the way to the Locust Grove Picnic Area. There are portapottys at the trailhead parking lot.
Q: I can’t make it to the race anymore, can I get a refund?
A: Unfortunately we do not offer refunds for our events. Thank you for understanding!

Q: What should I bring for my donation?
A: The most needed items currently include: cereal, granola bars, breakfast bars, kids snacks, tuna/canned chicken, boxed milk, brown rice, tomato sauce, peanut butter, almond butter, jelly, canned fruit, toilet paper, paper towels, shampoo and conditioner. They are NOT in need of: beans, mac and cheese, pasta or canned veggies.
Q: Can I bring my dog?
A: Sorry, but Padfoot has to stay at home for this race. Our liability insurance does not cover dogs; thank you for understanding!
Q: Can I sign my kids up for the Fat Sass?
A: Yes! This is a family friendly event. Be sure to register your child separately and agree to the waiver for minors. And make sure to keep track of little Jake and Elwood before during and after the race. We only have 1 search-party and they're already out there looking for Sasquatch.
Q: What's the weather like in Millburn, NJ in July?
A: Blazing hot. Humid. Though based on this past winter, we may have snow flurries. Be ready for anything.
Q: What kind of food will you have at the aid station?
A: Toasted white bread, 4 fried chickens and a coke.
Q: Ummm what?
A: This is a fat ass event--we won't be providing any aid besides water. But you and your friends will be bringing food to share with everyone.
Q: Ok sooooo then what food should I bring?
A: What would Sasqautch eat? Beef Jerky? Steak? Raw eggs? The answer to that is irrelevant, unless you plan on hunting for the Squatch while you're running. Bring whatever you enjoy eating during a race and bring some extra to share with everyone.
Q: I could get lost in a brown paper bag. Will the course be marked?
A: YES. We will have bright colored ribbons along the course and plenty at each of the turns.
Q: Speaking of directions, what’s the best address for me to use to get to the Locust Grove Picnic Area?
A: 1060 West Addison.
Q: 1060 West Addison? That's Wrigley Field.
A: Just kidding. Plug in "Millburn Public Library". The trails are right across the street.
Q: I want to sign up for the event, but I know I won't stay out there to run the entire time. Can I still sign up?
A: YES! If at any point you decide that you're finished running and you do not want to go out for another loop please tell a volunteer so we know that you are no longer out on the course.
