A Duathlon in Williamsburg, VA!
Please join us on Saturday, December 28 in beautiful Freedom Park! Race starts at 9am. Race includes a Run/Bike/Run format. The first Run is 5 miles of single track trail running, followed by a 10 mile mountain bike section and finishing with a 2.5 trail run. The 17.5 total miles include over 15 miles on the challenging Freedom Park trail system. The trail elevation is not excessive, but there are constant switchbacks, roots and tight turns.
Trail Map and info
Trail map is here:
The 5 mile run section will use the A loop, 2.5 mile section will use the B loop. The bike will use the D & E loops and the multiuse will connect all. The transition area will be in the field adjacent to the Botanical Garden on the map.
The start finish will be next to the interpretive center. There will be be a mile of multiuse trail before entering the narrow single track to spread out the field. If the link above does not work, please copy and paste in your browser.
The elevation in the park is only 200-300 feet per trail, but there are frequent roots and twists and turns. There are not many sections to get up speed, but the trails are beautiful and well maintained.
There will be water stops with some food and first aid at the 2 mile and 4 mile of the 5 mile section. There are 2 water stops in the bike section and 1 in the 2.5 mile section of the run.
The transition area will also have food, drink and first aid supplies.
I have received questions about the type of bike that can be used for this event. EVMA (Eastern Virginia Mountain Bike Assoc) was consulted on this and they feel that a CX or Gravel bike is fine to use for this race IF you are an experienced rider. If you are not skillful and experienced, you will struggle with this type of bike, Hope this is helpful!
If we experience heavy rain or wet conditions the day before or the day of the race, the trails might become closed to bikes. If this happens, we will re route the bike section onto multiple loops of the Multiuse trails 1, 2 & 3. These are like fire roads with some dirt and some pavement. It will be a different challenge than being on the single track, but still scenic and fun! I will make this announcement 24 hours before the race start.
Post Race Party!
Post race gathering in the Freedom Park Interpretive Center (and patio weather permitting) will include Pizza, Beer and other food and refreshments! We will light a fire and talk about our goals for 2020 :) There are fireplaces inside and out to stay toasty.
