The Scavenger's Hunt

As Summer 2020 runs down, The Troubled Raccoon has devised another challenge. This time, the scavenger challenges you to collect points for the distance you run/walk every day in August. Run 1 mile, 5k, 10k, 10 miles, a half marathon, a marathon, or ultra distance to earn more points each day. The farther you run, the more points you earn.

But... that’s not all! Each week, The Troubled Raccoon will offer you new challenges to build up your points. These challenges may be running-related (e.g., how much vert can you gain?) - or just for fun (e.g., take a picture of a wild animal on your run/walk).

You’ll have all of August to rack up points. The male and female runners with the highest scores on August 31st will win the grand prizes.

How does it work?

Run or walk whenever you want, wherever you want (trail, road, treadmill, backyard…). Just make sure it’s legal and safe. Log your mileage for each day using the form we provide and we’ll keep track of the points.

Every weekend, The Troubled Raccoon will send out the challenges for the following week and you will have until midnight on Sunday to complete them. You can submit your challenges until 11:59 PM Eastern Standard Time on the following Tuesday.

At 11:59PM Eastern Standard Time on August 31st, the challenge will close. You will have 2 days to submit any remaining points. The top winners will be announced once all points are tallied.

Swag and awards

Every registered runner will receive a handmade award from RaggedCuts. The awards are wooden medallion style awards made specifically for this event.

We will also be ordering T-shirts for all entrants. T-shirts will be high quality and comfortable. To guarantee a t-shirt and sizing, register for the event by 11:59 PM Eastern Standard Time on July 31st. I will order some extra shirts for late registrants, but I cannot promise sizing or quantity. If you register after July ends, I will do my best to obtain the size you request, but you may not get a shirt in your size (so register early!)

Charitable giving

As runners, we love nature and the outdoors. To help ensure we can continue to enjoy the natural world, a portion of each registration will be donated to the Evelyn Alexander Wildlife Rescue Center to support its mission to save and protect Long Island’s native wildlife.

Running safety

Make sure that you take all appropriate safety precautions when running in the dark. Pick a safe place you know well, bring a light, and wear bright or reflective clothing. You should always let people know where you are running and when you will return, but this is especially important when running outside of your normal schedule.

Make sure that you follow all local advisories regarding safety and Covid-19. Respect appropriate social distancing and sanitary warnings. Endurance events, such as running, may impact your ability to recover and your immune system. Please take this into account when planning your runs and other activities.
