9/22/20: Due to 30 straight days of smoke from Northern California Fires, we have extended the H150/100/50 Open Course event through March. You must sign up by March 3rd and complete the event by March 31st, 2021.
Welcome to COVID-19 ERA racing. This is an "OPEN COURSE" event. Open Course Trail Racing is not virtual, it's real. We just won't be there with our usual production. In fact, we won't be there at all. See, with PWRLab, Pacific Coast Trail Runs Race Director, Greg Lanctot has created the next generation of racing. They call it "Open Course" or "Real Course", whatever you desire. It's the future, and trademarked for your racing pleasure. Coming soon to race directors all over the world.
Social & Physical Distancing etiquette: According to COVID-19 healthy guidelines, it is not required to wear a mask while exercising. However, we recommend you start to put on a face covering when within 75 feet of another park goer. Please use common sense and behave like the good natured trail runner that you are.
"Open Course" in the Marin Headlands, Golden Gate National Recreation Area
Welcome to the Marin Headlands just north of the Golden Gate Bridge. Since the Marin Headlands are a National Park, the trails are open 24-Hours. We are not required to have a permit for any event that is not staged as a "live" event. There will be no arch, no course markings, nor any sign of an event going on. It's you, technology, and the trail. Oh, and we highly recommend crews for your safety and enjoyment.
Choose between Headlands Hundred Fifty (150M), Headlands Hundred (100M), Headlands Fifty (50M). Running in the Marin Headlands is a treat for any distance. Also known as "Trail Running Mecca" in California, you will enjoy vistas of the Pacific Coast as you take a scenic tour of the spectacular Marin Headlands with views of San Francisco, Tiburon, the Golden Gate Bridge and California coastline. The course is a 25-mile loop. The first loop is clockwise. Then the course reverses direction to counterclockwise and alternate (“washing machine” loops).
You can leave the course at anytime to meet your personal needs. You are only required to reenter the course the same place you exited.
Welcome to Headlands 150M, 100M, and 50M
Runners and hikers can start and finish the event from August 22nd through October 25th.
- The Marin Headlands are open 24 Hours.
- You will be a "park goer" or "day/night user" and act civilly as you would during one of our magnificent events.
- You will just simply need to follow some rules: Park rules and PCTR technology rules.
- We will help you plan for a safe journey. You just need to execute the journey.

How it works:
- You will pick a 6 day window to run and we will then coordinate the mailing.
- The Race Director will personally speak with you on the phone to go over the course, strategy, and rules.
- You will be mailed the beacon and be personally responsible for it during your event.
- Your crew and emergency contact info will be verified.
- You will then confirm the start time and day of your event.
- We will program this in to the leaderboard and track you.
- You will start and confirm your start via the phone to the Race Director.
- You or your crew will then verify each loop completion.
- Then hopefully, we all are able to celebrate your triumph.

Strava Counter Clockwise Loop
- This is the route that has most often been used during the history of Headlands Hundred
- All Entrants must start the first loop before 11am.
- 150 Milers will run the 1st, 3rd, and 5th loops in the clockwise direction. 2nd, 4th, and 6th (counter clock-wise)
- 100 Milers will run the 1st and 3rd loops in the clockwise direction. 2nd and 4th (counter clock-wise)
- 50 Milers will run the 1st loop clockwise and the 2nd loop counter clock-wise.
Turnaround Locations:
- Runners must touch certain points when getting to these three end points on course.
Rules
Crew (Virtual Crew) Rules:
- Crews are allowed and required for all distances.
- Crews do not need to be on the trails or in the nearby parking lots.
- Crews can be virtual as they must be only able to answer the phone when the RD calls for any reason while you are on course.
- All members of your crew (over 18) will be required to give phone number to race director.
- CARS are NOT allowed to park over night in Tennessee Valley from Sunset to Sunrise (PARK RULES).
- Crews are NOT allowed to be in Muir Beach from Sunset to Sunrise (PARK RULES).
- Crews are NOT allowed to be in near Alta Trail at any time (That is Private Property)
- Crews can access other key points to crew successfully (Rodeo Beach, Rodeo Valley, HWY 1 @ Miwok, GGB, etc)
Pacers & Mule Rules:
- Pacers are allowed for all distances.
- Pacers are NOT allowed on the first loop any distance.
- Mules are animals and most definitely not allowed on the trails.
- Muling, on the other hand, while not allowed during normal racing, will be allowed for safety and victory.
- Muling is the act of carrying food, water, clothing, and/or other accessories necessary for runners.

Parking your main vehicle:
- The best place to leave a vehicle is at Rodeo Beach and Rodeo Valley.
- CARS are NOT allowed to park over night in Tennessee Valley from Sunset to Sunrise (PARK RULES).
- We recommend that you have multiple car keys and strategically placed for safety.
- Preferably you use your trunk and cars tend to be broken into when valuables are in sight.
Electronics & Back-up Battery Supply:
- Lightening is key at night. Both head and waist lamps recommended.
- Handheld super powerful flashlights are also great.
- Having Two light sources at once helps prevent tunnel vision.
Water Fountain:
- Rodeo Beach Picnic Area
- Wherever and how your get food and water is up to you.
Restrooms:
- Rodeo Beach -> Sunrise to Sunset only
- Muir Beach -> Sunrise to Sunset only
- Tennessee Valley -> Open 24 hours
