This is a runner/hiker friendly event and definitely family-friendly! The race course will close at sunset which is 4:30pm so runners/hikers need to finish up by 4:30pm. All events will use our 5K trail loop. As with all of our events, Squatchers over the age of 60 and AWD (athletes with disabilities) can have a pacer/guide at any time. Please use this form to pre-register your pacers. Pacers are not allowed for other runners and hikers without prior approval from the Trail Party Director.

10K - 2 loops. Check-in between 8:15am-8:45am. 9am start
5K - 1 loop. Check-in between 8:15am-8:45am. 9am start

All runners/hikers will receive a handcrafted wood medal and a finishers' item! There are portapottys within walking distance to the trailhead.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

We will use the same 5K loop from our Frosty Fat Sass race in January. There are portapottys at the start/finish area. The course will be marked: The first 2.75 miles are double-wide trails and the last 1/2 mile is singletrack. Start on the Hillspur trail. When the trail splits, stay left to continue onto Longwood Trail. Turn right onto Reservoir Road Trail; the Girl Scout Camp will be on your left (if you run through the camp or if you hit a road, you missed the turn!). At the bottom of the mountain, follow the orange trail markers to make a right onto Reservoir Trail. At the first split, keep left to stay on Reservoir Trail. Reservoir Trail will turn into the white-dot Zoo Loop Trail. After the trail becomes a single track, turn right onto connector trail (marked by orange duct tape). Take this all the way up to the parking lot, turn right to stay on the grass (the portapottys will be on your left) back to the start/finish. There's 289 ft of gain. You can download the gpx and map from our website.

OPERATION CHILLOUT

Our charity partner Operation Chillout delivers warm clothing to homeless Veterans around NJ and PA. In the past, we have collected warm clothing donations at this race, but this year - Operation Chillout is transitioning to only accepting monetary donations. They have established a great working relationship with a clothing vendor that can sell them warm clothing in large quantities at a reduced rate, so they will be able to use our funds to make a big impact! Click here to learn more about Operation Chillout.

TRAIL MIX FUND

Do you want to race but can’t afford the entry fee? Are you a part of the BIPOC or LGBTQ+ community?
"Apply to the Trail Mix Fund to have your registration fee waived!" Sassquad Trail Running is proud to partner with the non-profit the Trail Mix Fund for the Squatchapple, Big Bear North & South, Sterling Squatch and Wild Goose. Founded in 2020 by our friends in Oregon at Go Beyond Racing, the Trail Mix Fund uses donations to help people who are under-served, under-resourced, and under-represented. This includes people of color and LGBTQ+, but is not restricted to those communities.

FAQ's

Q: Can I have a pacer?
A: As with all of our events, Squatchers over the age of 60 and AWD (athletes with disabilities) can have a pacer/guide at any time. Please use this form to pre-register your pacers. Pacers are not allowed for other runners and hikers without prior approval from the Trail Party Director.

Q: Can I sign my kids up for the Squatchy Leftovers?
A: Yes! This is a family friendly event. Be sure to register your child separately and agree to the waiver for minors. And make sure to keep track of Maggie and Jack before during and after the event. We only have 1 search-party and they're already out there looking for Sasquatch.

Q: What's the weather like in West Orange, NJ in November?
A: Cold. Snow. Maybe Hail. Balmy? Dress warm. Bring layers. Be smart.

Q: I could get lost in a brown paper bag. Will the course be marked?
A: Lost, lost lost... I've lost my marbles... Oh ehem... YES. We will have bright colored ribbons along the course and plenty at all of the turns. We will also do our best to mark the ground for each of the turns (this depends on the snow situation).

Q: I don't want to run, are there any volunteer opportunities?
A: Yes! We always need Sassy Volunteers! Please email us if you would like to volunteer: trailpartyracedirector@sassquadtrailrunning.com

Q: If I sign up for the 10K but don't feel like running another loop once I finish the first one, can I stop running?
A: You are fart factory, slug-slimed, sack-of-rat-guts-in-cat-vomit, cheesy, scab-picked, pimple-squeezing finger bandage. A week old maggot burger with everything on it and flies on the side!

Q: Um, that was rude... So, can I stop running after the first loop if I get tired?
A: Yes, of course you can. Please let the RD or volunteer know if you are leaving the race.

Q: Can I bring my dog?
A: Nana cannot come to this race. Our liability insurance does not cover dogs in the race. Thank you for cooperating!

Q: Me and my friend aren't registered for the race, but we're still planning on coming to run. We won't eat from the aid station or take a medal or swag. This is okay, right?
A: NO THIS IS NOT OKAY. This is called being a "race bandit" and it is stealing. Not paying for a race and running the race is stealing from the race organization (even if you're not taking food or swag). Don't do this at a Sassquad trail party or ANY other race. It's not okay. And if you hear about someone else doing this, call them out. If you bandit a race, you will be banned from registering for any of our Sassquad events.

Stop by one of our three convenient neighborhood locations and let us help you find the "perfect ride for every stride." Millburn, Florham Park and Basking Ridge.

REFUNDS/DEFERRALS

Like many other race organizations, we do not offer refunds for our events. Please take the time to double check your calendar before registering for a Trail Party. Please understand that we do not offer refunds under any circumstances. If you notify us via email (not through social media, text or phone call) more than 45 days from the date of the Trail Party, we will extend a deferral to any of our events that fall within one calendar year of the Trail Party that you were registered for. If you sustain an injury less than 45 days from the race date, we will extend a deferral if you come to that race to volunteer for at least 4 hours. If the race that you want to drop from is sold-out with an active wait-list and if you notify us via email (not through social media, text or phone call) at least 3 days before the race, we will extend a deferral to any of our events that fall within one calendar year of the Trail Party that you were registered for. The race credit is the amount that you paid for the race (not including UltraSignUp fees) so you will need to cover any difference in fees; refunds will not be issued if the deferred event costs less than your race credit. You can only defer one time so please doublecheck that you can make the race you're deferring to.
