The Lowdown

Okay so it's not the Moscow Mountain Madness we know and love, but out of calamity is born creativity: welcome to the Moscow Mountain Cache Dash!

The MMCD is a virtual (for this year) trail “race” designed to help people explore the wonderful privately owned resource that is Moscow Mountain. The idea is simple: over the course of a month, take a selfie with each of five caches that we’ve
distributed across some of our favorite trails and then submit that picture and a gpx file or link to
your run(s). We will provide rough locations and suggested routes for each cache, but it’s up to you to find your way
there!

Details

  • Where: Moscow Mountain, Moscow, Idaho
  • When: Any time from 12:00am October 1st to 11:59:59pm October 31st
  • Four Awards:
    • Shortest distance to find all caches in a single run
    • Longest distance to find all caches in a single run (see rules)
    • Shortest distance to find all caches in more than one but not more than five runs
    • Longest distance to find all caches in more than one but not more than five runs (see rules)

Rules

Since Moscow Mountain is privately owned and we want to both respect owners’ wishes and
maintain access to trails, we will disqualify any runner who does not follow these rules. The race
is a fun adventure, the rules are serious.

1. You must remain on official Moscow Mountain trails as per AllTrails and Mamba or roads at all times. No crashing through
underbrush to shorten your distance.
2. Your run must begin and end at an official parking lot, and you must start and end at the
same parking lot. Allowed parking lots include Headwaters trailhead, Trail Landing
parking, and Four Corners parking. Parking lots are described in detail below. (Note that
Warnick Rd parking is NOT an official parking lot for this event.)
3. Your selfie must include your face and the cached item.
4. Your recording must be done in “running” mode, no using hiking modes to shorten your
“distance”.
5. You may retrace steps if combining getting multiple caches in a single run or doing an
out and back, and going to a cache via a very indirect route is also acceptable (even
encouraged - the point is to explore the trails).

Cache Locations

The current cache locations are described below, but official locations along with images and suggested routes will be emailed to you before the start of October. Use the descriptions below to get a sense of the distances involved and perhaps plan some unusual extra long routes.

The Headwaters Car Cache

South Side is a trail that connects Headwaters, Velo, and Hey Noose. If you’re taking South
Side heading east, after you pass by Velo it drops down into a forested area. Before you get to
the lowest part, well before you begin climbing back up to meet the bottom of Hey Noose, there
is a car on its side to your right. It’s not obvious, so keep your eye out!

Shortest recommended route: From the headwaters parking lot, take headwaters counter clockwise to the four way intersection and turn right. Follow South Side for about a quarter mile. Round trip distance: ~5 miles.

Longest recommended route: Starting from headwaters, run clockwise to Velo and follow the road out to troy. Turn around and run back on trails to avoid hitting the road twice! Round trip distance: unknown.

Paradise Point Cache

Just past paradise point you'll find taco rock heading downhill. The cache is to your left!

Shortest recommended route: From the headwaters parking lot, take headwaters counter clockwise to the four way intersection and turn right. Follow South Side to Hey Noose and Moose Marbles to Wagon. Round trip distance: ~8 miles.

Gemini Cache

On Gemini, near the Warnick Rd parking area, there is an old cabin. Note that you are NOT allowed to park at the Warnick Rd parking area for the purposes of this event.

Shortest recommended route: Start from four corners parking. Head down jump trail, taking a left at the gravel road and heading down to Warnick parking. Get on Gemini trail from there. Round trip distance: ~4 miles.

LaFortune’s Flight Lookout Cache

If you’ve ground your way up to enjoy a view near the top of La Fortune’s flight, you’re
likely standing on a viewpoint known as Coffee Rocks.

Shortest recommended route: From Four Corners, take Nemisis or the road up to LaFortune's Flight. Round trip distance: ~4 miles.

Rock & A Hard Place Lookout Cache

The Viewpoint is fairly early on if you’re doing this trail counter clockwise.

Shortest recommended route: From Four Corners, take Rock & a Hard Place. The lookout isn't far! Round trip distance: ~3 miles.
