This event has been postponed from Apr 02, 2021 to Aug 6, 2021
The first ever Wisconsin’s Backyard Ultra is coming to you for 2021.
COVID 19 took our 2020 event as well as Golden Ticket chance away from us. However, we excited to announce that the 2021 Big Hill Bonk has been selected again as a Golden Ticket event for the 2021 Big's Backyard Ultra.
Inspired by the Barkley Marathons’ creator, Gary Cantrell, aka Lazarus Lake, who started the original Big Dog’s Backyard Ultra, more races of this format have been popping up around the world. This is one of them.
So in likewise fashion, the Wisconsin’s Backyard Ultra will follow as closely to Laz’s original format as possible.
It truly is a simple concept. It’s a “Last Person Standing Race”. Meaning in the end, just one runner will finish the race.
At 1730 hours on Friday evening, April 2nd, we will start a race at the Welty Environmental Center in Beloit Wisconsin’s Big Hill Park and run a 4.166 mile loop. Runners will have just one hour to complete this loop.
Again at 1830 hours, we will begin another loop around the same 4.166 mile course.
The same will be done at 1930, 2030, 2130, and so on, every hour.
Runners must be standing in the starting corral when the next loop starts or else they will not be able to continue.
Runners will also not continue if they choose not to themselves.
There will be no late starts once the bell is rung.
Loops will continue until only one runner remains, and at that point, once that person completes a loop on their own, that runner is the winner.
All other runners are a DNF.
It is important to note there MUST be one person to finish a loop in the hour given. For example: If two runners are left and they both finish a loop in the time given and then one runner drops, the other runner still must complete another loop in the time given. If that last runner does not finish the last loop in the hour given, he will have “DNF” and there will be no finishers.
At 3 minutes till each loop 3 whistles will be blown.
At 2 minutes till each loop 2 whistles will be blown.
At 1 minute till each loop 1 whistle will be blown.
A bell is rung to signal the start of each loop.
Once the bell is rung, runners may not visit their crew, their tent, their vehicle or receive aid from anyone.
Runners must stay on the course once the bell is rung.
The only reason for leaving the course once the bell is rung is to use the porta-potty.
Once you finish your loop you may choose to do what you want, but must be back in the starting corral before the bell rings.
Runners will need to provide their own aid.
Crews are permitted, but limited to just 1 crew member per runner at all times (this is to keep the area surrounding the starting corral as clear as possible), and crews are not needed. Crews may leave and come back if needed.
There will be a space next to the start and finish line to set up a chair, cooler, and other small personal items.
An area will be close by where you may set up a tent.
Any runner that DNF’s must immediately vacate their spot close to the finish line to allow surviving runners to move closer. DNF runners are welcome to continue spectating the Wisconsin’s Backyard Ultra.
Porta-potties will be located approx. 100yds from the starting corral.
Brats, burgers, veggie burgers, and chili (vegan and none-vegan options) will be provided through-out the event close to the starting corral.
A fire ring to will continue to burn a fire. This is your trap.
Alcohol is not permitted (Sorry…It’s a city owned park which prohibits alcohol)
Water is provided.
Coffee is provided.

2021 Registration Process
All runners who were previously registered and have paid their fee for the 2020 Big Hill Bonk will receive a roll over credit of $50 off the 2021 registration fee. Please note that this is simply a credit to be applied to the 2021 event should you decide to register again. It cannot be redeemed for or will it be refunded for a cash value.
Those runners will also have until Jan 31st,2021 to utilize their credit in order to be guaranteed entry into the 2021 event. If by then it has been decided that the 2021 event will be able to in fact take place, on February 1st, confirmation invites will be sent to all those previous 2020 runners on the waitlist to be given one last chance to confirm if they still wish to participate. They will have 3 days to accept or deny their entry. If they accept, their card will be processed for payment and will be officially registered. Should they deny or not respond within the 3-day window, no payment will be processed, and their spot will be offered to someone else who is next in line on the wait list.
All new runners who register will be placed on a wait list until Feb 4th (once all the previous runners have their chance to receive their guaranteed entry). On that day invites will start to be sent out to runners in order of earliest placed on waitlist. Those runners will then have 24 hours to confirm or deny entry.
Given that we are waiting until February to process any payments on top of allowing runners to confirm one last time to decide if they want to register, there will be absolutely no refunds issued once payments have been processed.
