There is the Mayapple, the Febapple and now THE SQUATCHAPPLE!! Join us on Saturday April 10, 2021 for the Squatchapple Trail Race at the South Mountain Reservation in West Orange, NJ! With distances for everyone, this trail party is open to runners and hikers of all ages and paces. Runners/hikers can sign up to squatch 11 miles, 20 miles, 33 miles or 50 miles! We will be supporting the South Mountain Conservancy with this trail party!


The start/finish area for ALL events is at the Tulip Springs Trailhead on Cherry Lane in West Orange: To any runners/hikers taking public transportation via the train, the closest train station is Millburn Station and is 3 mi drive or 2.7 mi trail run through the reservation. The earliest train arrives at 7:56am. For any NYC runners wanting to run the 50M, you can begin the 50M when you arrive at the race as it is chip-timed. Please note, there is a 12 hour cutoff so all runners must be off of the course by 8pm.

This trailhead has a large parking lot along with many picnic tables. Please feel free to setup your gear using a picnic table or leave gear in your car (just be aware that we cannot supervise your gear or be responsible for it). Our aid station and check-in area will be at the main covered pavilion next to the parking lot. There are portajohns here, as well as along the course.

Runners/hikers can sign-up for a 11 miler, 20 miler, 33 miler or 50 miler. To comply with local/state outdoor gathering limits, we will have each distance start in waves of no more than 50 people. On 3/15/21 We updated the following times to consolidate waves:

50 Miler Start Time: 8am, check-in 7:30am-7:45am
33 Miler Start Time: 8:30am, check-in 8am-8:15am
20 Miler Start Time 9:30am, check-in 9am-9:15am
11 Miler Start Time 10:30am, check-in 10am-10:15am

20 Miler Start Time 1:00pm, check-in 12:30pm-12:45pm
11 Miler Start Time 2:00pm, check-in 1:30pm-1:45pm

All runners/hikers will take home a handcrafted wood medal that we make here in the Squatch Shop. As well as an item of your choice from the Squatch Shop (hat, buff, bag etc). The top 3 females and males will take home a very squatchtastic handcrafted award!


The Squatchapple course consist of 3 different lollipop loops that all start/finish at the Tulip Springs Trailhead. The loops are 4 miles, 5.5 miles and 7 miles. Runners/hikers will complete a combination of these three loops to achieve the distances that they registered for. If you decide to drop down during the race to a smaller distance, please note that you cannot qualify for post-race awards.

4 Mile Turtleback Loop, PINK RIBBONS: 370 ft gain, 75% carriage roads, 25% singletrack.

5.5 Mile Locust Grove Loop, CHECKERED RIBBON. 600 ft gain. 75% carriage roads, 25% singletrack.

7 Mile Mayapple Loop BLUE RIBBONS: 815 ft gain. 95% singletrack, 5% grass field. Note: this loop has a road crossing - all runners/hikers must cross legally and only when they have the right-of-way at the crosswalk!

50 Miler: 5,355 ft gain - Pink, Checkered, Blue repeated 3 x’s
33 Miler: 3,570 ft gain - Pink, Checkered, Blue repeated 2 x’s
20 Miler: 2,155 ft gain - Pink, Checkered, Blue, Pink
11 Miler: 1,185 ft gain - Pink, Blue


All runners/hikers must be off of the course by 8PM.
- This is a very hiker-friendly event for most of the events
- A 11 hr 30 min cut-off for the 33M is a 20 min 50 sec /mile pace
- A 12 hour cut-off for the 50M is 14 min/mile pace. If you would like to start earlier for the 50M because you are worried about the cutoff, please reach out to us and we will make it happen! We can have 50 milers start as early as 6:30am. Please email us if you would like to start early:


Our squatchtastic "Dream Team Extreme" has been tirelessly working out all of the details to make this trail party safe, fun and an all-around squatchy time. Here are the details you need to know before you register for this trail party!
- Waves are limited to 25 runners per wave start time.
- Although we do not anticipate this, in the event that the county pulls the permit, we will give all pre-registered runners/hikers a 100% credit to any 2021 Sassquad event. Please note, this means that we are not offering refunds on the non-refundable registration fee.
- Runners/hikers will use a mask during check-in, at the start of the race and at the aid station. All runners will need to carry a mask/buff with them and should use them anytime you cannot stay 6 feet apart from other people.
- Please come to the start/finish during your assigned check-in time (listed above) and avoid coming early or late to your assigned time.
- Our aid station will be well-stocked with pre-packaged snacks and water. We will have hot food items at the aid station after 12PM. Runners/hikers will not touch any of the foot items (no community food bowls or self-service). Runners/hikers are welcome to bring their own aid and setup their gear at the parking lot.

Q: Can I bring my dog?
A: Sorry, but Einstein has to stay at home for this race. Our liability insurance does not cover dogs at our events; thank you for understanding!

Q: Can I sign my kids up for this trail party?
A: Yes! We want the WHOLE family to come out to our events! We have a special discount code for families registering 3 or more Squatches in the same household. Please email us ( before you register so we can give you the code! Once you have the code, be sure to register your child separately and agree to the waiver for minors. And make sure to keep track of Marty and Biff before during and after the race. We only have 1 search-party and they're already out there looking for Sasquatch.

Q: What's the weather like in West Orange, NJ in April?
A: Great Scott! It could be cold. Maybe. It could be warm. Check the weather before the race and dress appropriately. The zip code for the race is 07052.

Q: This will be my first trail race. What do I need to know?
A: This is heavy.

Q: No really, it is my first trail race! Any advice?
A: Seriously, we are SO EXCITED that you are choosing a Sassquad event for your first trail race! This is a great choice for your first race because these trails have a bit of everything! You'll run on easy carriage roads, technical singletracks and enjoy flat trails and hilly trails. You're going to LOVE it!

Q: Are there any roads on the course?
A: Roads? Where we are going, we don't need roads! There is only 1 very, very short stretch of pavement that is less than .20 miles long. There is also 1 road crossing at a stoplight that has a crosswalk. Runners/hikers are only allowed to cross LEGALLY and must wait for the right-of-way at the crosswalk!

Q: What food will you have at the aid station?
A: We will have pre-packaged snacks for the shorter distances and then hot food items after 12PM. You are more than welcome to bring your own food/water and setup your own aid station in the parking lot. You will come back to the lot after every loop.

Q: I could get lost in a brown paper bag. Will the course be marked?
A: We will have bright colored ribbons along the course and plenty at all of the turns, along with large red directional arrows..

Q: I don't want to run, are there any volunteer opportunities?
A: Yes! We always need Sassy Volunteers! Please email us at if you would like to volunteer!

Q: Are there restrooms at the start/finish area?
A: There are one portajohns at the start/finish area. There are also portajohn's at the halfway point of each of the three loops.

Q: I can't come to the race anymore, can I get a refund?
A: Unfortunately we do not offer refunds on the nonrefundable registration fee.

Through volunteer activities, public programs and partnership with the Essex County Parks Department, the SMC serves as a steward and advocate for the South Mountain Reservation. The SMC strives to preserve, protect, and enhance the ecology, infrastructure and natural beauty of this regional park and to foster public appreciation and support for it. Since 2018, Sassquad Trail Runners have donated over $9,000 to the Conservancy!
