Health Regulation Compliance
The VI Department of Health has approved the permit for the race. Runners will need to maintain social distancing or mask up at the start of the race and during the race, such as close interactions with volunteers. Runners have always been encouraged to run self-supported with their own water, but for those taking water at the water stations, we will primarily make that self-service.
Overview
This trail race on St. John features beautiful views, diverse ecosystems, and challenging single track climbs and descents. The course from Cruz Bay to Coral Bay follows a renowned series of National Park trails that traverse peaks, ridges, ravines, and beaches across the entire island.
The half marathon course distance is 13.6 miles with an elevation gain of 2,772 feet. The course is technically challenging with several steep ascents and descents on very rugged trails. The finish line and post-race celebration and awards ceremony will be at Skinny Legs in Coral Bay.
Runners need to be carrying at least one water bottle and fully self-supported running is encouraged. There are several transition checkpoints across roads that will have replacement water (if not self-supported). The longest segment between checkpoints is 4.5 miles (Fish + Reef Bay). Supporters of the racers may cheer them on at these transition points, but great care should be take at the Reef Bay Trail Head, due to traffic danger in that area.
There are several public toilets along the route, including at miles 0, 2.5, 7, 9, and 11. The maximum time for the half marathon will be 4.0 hours, and 3.0 hours for the 9.5 Miler. These max time cutoffs are intended to avoid taxing our volunteers or St. John Rescue in their sweep of the course. As a guide to estimating your finish time, assume it will take about 2.5 times as long as the 8 Tuff Miles road race for the Half Marathon, and about 2 times as long for the 9.5 Miler.
NEW: The Relay exchange points are the L'esperance Trail Head (4 miles) and Maho Bay (9.5 miles). Runners will tag up on the honor system. Runners are responsible for their own transportation to and from the exchange points and there will be a shuttle from Maho Bay to Coral Bay for the 9.5 Miler runners.
