COWBELL RACE SERIES DESCRIPTION

The Idaho Falls Trail Runners, Jeremy Smith, and Jeff Fullmer Proudly Presents:

The 2022 COWBELL RACE SERIES!!

***********************
January 3, 2022 Update:
Unfortunately we are going to have to move the Yeti Spaghetti to a virtual one.
Jeremy in Soda Springs has a family emergency and both he and his wife will be out of town for the next week. The following weeks (if we wanted to move it to another weekend) are uncertain as well.
We are going to do this virtually, on the registration page there is now a button to record your results. It requires proof of either a screenshot of your run results or a link to your run data.
Please record and report on at least a 5.5 mile run AND IT NEEDS TO BE ON SNOW with some elevation gain. It doesn't need to be knee high snow or anything but no treadmill or cleared track. Sidewalks or roads that are covered in some snow will count but there needs to be some elevation gain. Feel free to share anything over 5.5 miles as your entry but anything less then that will not count.
Have fun and we look forward to seeing your snowy pictures!
You will have from Saturday Morning the 8th until Monday night the 10th to record your results. Only a run during those timeframes will count!

Ring in the New Year with TWO EPIC ADVENTURES, the first being the 'YETI SPAGHETTI' held in January, and then race #2, the SOUP IN THE SNOW held the first Saturday of February.

Both are located in beautiful South-East Idaho, where loco-local trail runners will sprint, trudge, crawl, & scamper their way through the woods & rivers in two remote locations... Pot-luck meals, runner-to-runner bonding, & snowball fights likely to follow our events. All abilities welcome!

No prizes for first... No free tee-shirts… No aid stations...

BUT NO ENTRY FEE so you get what you pay for!

Head over to Facebook for more up to date details HERE on the Idaho Falls Trail Runners Facebook page. Please request to join the group if you have not already.

****Note that this is also included with Dan Beck's Bad Ideas of Winter collection of events HERE***

RACE #1: YETI-SPAGHETTI

The race will take place at 2:00pm on January 8th, in SODA SPRINGS, IDAHO! Rest assured that the camaraderie you find and the beauty of the forested trail will make the trip well-worth it.

RACE COURSE: After a brief pre-race meeting at 1:45pm in Race Director 'Coach Smith's' garage, runners will assemble in the driveway, beginning their 'mountain 10k' on a steep dirt-road incline for 1 mile, before turning onto a well-used jeep trail taking you through a snowy forested wonderland. After a 3.5-mile wooded loop, runners return to the dirt road, running one final fast mile before completed their journey back where they began! There are several 'trail intersections' that will be well marked for the runners

DISTANCES: One distance will be offered: 5.5 miles, aka, a 'mountain 10k'. The elevation of the course is a stout 1,200+ feet!! Click HERE for the CalTopo course link.

TRANSPORTATION

START/FINISH LINE DIRECTIONS: The actual start/finish of the race will be at 2781 Bailey Creek Rd in Soda Springs. Putting in the address to google maps will not get you to the location. Here is the exact spot and also please follow the directions below.

Here is the google maps location:  CLICK HERE FOR DIRECTIONS

Driving Directions: From Idaho Falls or Pocatello, drive South on I-15 to the McCammon Exit with a big Flying J Truck Stop (follow signs directing you to Lava Hot Springs). Head East on Hwy 34, pass by Lava Springs, and enter the tiny hamlet of Soda Springs. At the 2nd traffic light in town, take a RIGHT and head about 5 miles up toward BAILEY CREEK. Pass under the BAILEY CREEK ARCH and take your next RIGHT... There will be a clubhouse/tennis courts on your left. Please park at the Tennis Courts. A 'shuttle truck' will be going up and down the hill to take runners from their cars to the starting line, as there is very limited parking and depending on recent storms, 4WD will be necessary to get up the hill. PLEASE CARPOOL IF AT ALL POSSIBLE, AS SPACES ARE LIMITED!!

POST-RACE DINNER and LAVA HOT SPRINGS SOCIAL

While registration for COWBELL RACES is COMPLETELY FREE, you still must register to run on ultrasignup.com. Participants in the YETI-SPAGHETTI event are asked to commit to bring either a bread, pasta dish, dessert, or side dish to share. Please sign-up when you register on Ultrasignup.com
The 'post race feast' will be held in 'Coach Smiths' recently purchased home...
Items brought in a crock pot can be brought into the garage before the pre-race meeting and they will be plugged in
Coach Smith would LOVE to remain married after the event, please be considerate and remove shoes before entering the house to use the bathroom (adherence to this guideline will also be CRITICAL for hosting future events!)
Bathrooms will be available before and after the race.

For those looking to enjoy the evening after dinner, BRING YOUR SWIMMING SUITS to socialize in the nearby LAVA HOT SPRINGS. With multiple pools and hot stones underfoot, its the perfect way to end an epic day with great friends. The hot pools are open till 11:00pm and the cost is $8 per person.

SPECIAL RACE-DAY WARNINGS:

Weather: IT IS GONNA BE COLD!! The race starts above 6000 feet, and January temperatures can be frigid. Prepare accordingly: Facemasks are not optional! Multiple clothing layers will be needed to keep you safe.
CUT-OFF TIME: We will close up shop three hours after the start (5:00pm). Runners finishing after that time will not have their time recorded. This should allow runners of many abilities to run the race. Please be reasonable with your 'pacing' expectations: This will be far more challenging than a normal 10k run!
