Allison Wood Outdoor Learning Center
Allison Woods Outdoor Learning Center is an instructive facility that uses both land and water as an outdoor classroom. Immediately accessible are several lakes, streams, a large forest area, trails, and the wondrous variety of both plant of animal life that makes teaching and learning in an outdoor facility exciting and fun! The main lake has controlled access and records of land use and lake history to support physical research of it, the riparian zone, and the surrounding forest. First opening its doors to the community in 1992 and became one of the first environmental education centers in NC in 1993, the Allison Woods Outdoor Learning Center was conceived to encourage hands-on/minds-on learning about the environment to children who otherwise would not have those opportunities. A portion of the race funds after all expenses have been paid go to the Outdoor Learning Center. So far we have been able to donate over $4000 Dollars to the Allison Woods Outdoor Learning Center. We hope that with your help we will be able to donate just as much this year!!
About
Allison Woods is located just north of Statesville, NC. There are options for a 4 mile, 6 hr, 12 hr, 24 hr, and 100 mile endurance run. This will be a fun race for beginners and veterans alike. You will have 30 hours to complete the 100 mile event. The Halloween Hobble will be a great running weekend and costume contest extraviganza!!!
Course
The course runs through Allison Woods, which is on private property. It will be a 4 mile loop course, mostly on service roads. It runs through wooded areas around a pond, and you will cross over an airplane strip at the start and finish. The course is ever-changing, from huge bamboo forests, to beautiful fall foliage, and an old farm. This property has been in the Allison family since the 1700's; it is a run through this family’s rich history! Each 4 mile lap has a little over 300 ft of gain, and in the 100 mile event you can plan to gain a little over 9000 ft. We will have one main aid station at the start/finish area, and will have water stops on the outer loops. You will never be more than about a 1 mile from the main aid station.
Restrooms
There will be a number of Porta Johns set up at the start/finish area, which you will never be more than a mile away from.
Costume Contest
SInce this is a Halloween themed race, we will also be having a Costume Contest. As we get closer to the race, we will post more on prizes for best costumes!!
Camping and Hotels
Camping will be allowed on the grounds in three different locations on Friday and Saturday night. Two camping locations will be on one side of the old landing strip. The other camping location will be in a wooded area beside the course. We will have places designated for camp fires in those areas. Currently working on some discounts with local hotels
