Afton Summer Solstice

Thanks for joining us! The Afton Summer Solstice will be held on June 18th, 2022 just west of Indian River, in North Afton, Michigan. This is a 2.125 mile looped trail race. We will be offering multiple times to run. A 4, 8 & 16 hour option is available!

This will be a great day in Northern Michigan! This is an ultra, so typical food will be provided. If you need or want anything specific, we will try our best, so please don't hesitate to ask. The bonfire will be going all day, and into the night.

We decided to run this on a saturday instead of the actual sunday, so people would have time to rest and recoup! Plus, the sun comes up and sets at the same time both days!

There will be limited camping spots available in the area of the start/finish line and all around the lake. Let us know if you plan on camping and we will see what we can do!

Finisher swag

Each finisher will receive at least a finishers medal along with the shirt!

Capacity

We currently are capping the even at 100 participants. If we have a demand for more, we may open up additional spots.

Age

At this point, we are allowing 13 and older to run this course for the 4 hour event only!

Winners

Here, we are all winners! There will be no monetary prize, but each male and female, in each hour range with the most laps completed, will receive a cool award!

FAQ

What is the Summer Solstice?
The summer solstice, also known as estival solstice or midsummer, occurs when one of the Earth's poles has its maximum tilt toward the Sun. It happens twice yearly, once in each hemisphere.

What distances do you offer?
We don't! We offer times. You can run a 4 hour race, 8 hour race, or a 16 hour race.

What time do we start?
The 16 hour race will start at approx. 5:47am, and will end at approx. 9:32pm. No runner will be able to start the last loop after 9:20pm.
How long is the race?
All events are timed events and will start and end as shown below
Summer Solstice Race (6/18/2022)
16 Hours (5:47 AM - 9:32 PM) Last loop must be started no later then 9:20pm
8 Hours (1pm-9pm) Last loop must be started no later than 9pm(not 9:01pm)
4 Hours (8:00 AM - 12:00 PM) Last loop must be started no later than 12pm(not 12:01pm)
4 Hour Team Relay: (10am-2pm) Last loop must be started no later than 2pm(not 2:01pm)
Final loop start time determination will be based solely on the timing device clock and nothing else

This is not only for the safety of the runners, but the vollunteers that have been out there all day!Regarding the course, its a 2.125 mile course, so we will see you quite often.

Is this walker friendly?
Any race that we put on will be a walker friendly race! We want everybody to have the chance to enjoy the racing atmosphere, so go out and have fun!

Safety:
Even though we are in the woods, we still run the risk of seeing cars and ORVs. There will be ample signage throughout the course, but you can't just assume that people can read. If you see a dirt bike flying down the trail, jump in the lake and you will be fine! Just kidding...But you must remain vigilant and aware of your surroundings for your safety!

Course:
2.125 miles(approx) of dirt paths. The majority of the trails will be a hard packed surface, but you will encounter some soft sand. And depending on how much rain that week, maybe a little mud. But it will be fun!

Drop bags:
We will have a spot near the start/finish line for you to place your bags if needed. Also, if you need a rest during the day, feel free to bring a blanket and stretch out by the lake.

Food:
We are planning this all out, but the variety will be much of the same which you find at any ultra race. Except burgers, I like burgers and hotdogs, so we will be having those for sure. Some soup, pop, water, chips, pickles, sandwiches, and more...

Entertainment:
We will have music, and a bonfire. The fire will be going all day as will the music.

Camping:
There are spots around the lake to camp, and there will be limited spots near the start/finish line to pitch a tent or small camper. No electric and no showers. We will have porta johns near the start/finish line only. So if you feel like you may need it, don't wait until you get to the dam, that would be a long mile!

Trash:
Obviously, there will be trash, but we as trail runners know the impact trash has on the environment. We ask that you DO NOT throw your trash out while running. We will have a trash receptacle near the start/finish line, so please make sure you get it in the can!

Fun:
Most of all, have fun! Don't overdo it and don't push your bodies to the brink of disaster! Its not that serious, seriously. We want to have fun and live vicariously though each individual runner. Its tough to live vicariously through a runner in the hospital, so just enjoy yourself!
