Race Overview
The Quad Killer is a vertical kilometer foot race... with a couple of twists. The trail that will be used is in Benton City, WA at the Horse Heaven Hills Recreation Area (i.e. McBee trails). After a couple of years scouring the Tri-Cities area, this is the only trail that could be found to hold a VK race on. Since we don't have 3 mile long hills around here, this trail is short enough and steep enough to allow meeting the VK criteria (1 km elevation gain in 5 km distance) with hill repeats. The trail being used is 0.33 mile long and gains 662 feet of elevation. While the average grade is just over 37%, there are a few sections that hit 50%.
Participants will need to climb the trail 5 times and descend it 4 times, thus you start at the bottom and finish at the top. From experience, the crux of this race is not the elevation gain - it is the descents... hence the race name.

Virtual VK Details (Oct 7th - 20th)
The Virtual VK is the classic Quad Killer VK format, where you have 2 weeks to complete the event. You will self-time with a GPS device and submit a GPX file, Strava Link, or similar so your results can be verified. You can choose to complete the total distance in a single day in one effort, or you can break it up into multiple efforts and even across multiple days. Just know that your total elapsed time will be used for the results so if you start one day and finish another day, then the entire time from start to finish will be your race time. Here is an example... you decided to do one lap a day, starting the first one at 8am on Monday and finishing the last of the 5 climbs on Friday at 12pm then your resulting race time would be 100 hours).

Mass Start VK (Oct 12th)
NEW FOR 2024!! This option involves a mass start and will be run like a traditional race. To avoid significant carnage, this race will be on a looped course that comes down the traditional Quad Killer VK trail, but goes up a parallel trail. This will still involve climbing 5 times and descending 4 times, but everyone will be going the same direction (clockwise). Just like with the Virtual VK option, you will start at the bottom and finish at the top.
