The Course
The course is run mainly on the Ice Age Trail. The exceptions are for a very limited amount of time on both the north and south out and backs and during road crossings. This is a winter endurance event. All participants acknowledge that the winter elements in Wisconsin can be unforgiving. Plan. Plan. Plan. And plan some more. *Note: the Garmin route is underestimating the mileage. Total miles are closer to 63.5. Please keep this in mind on race day and while training.
About the Ice Age Trail
More than 12,000 years ago, an immense flow of glacial ice sculpted a landscape of remarkable beauty across Wisconsin. As the glacier retreated, it left behind a variety of unique landscape features. These glacial remnants are now considered among the world’s finest examples of how continental glaciation sculpts our planet.
The Ice Age National Scenic Trail is a thousand-mile footpath that highlights these landscape features as it travels through some of the state’s most beautiful natural areas. The Trail is entirely within Wisconsin and is one of only eleven National Scenic Trails.
But the Ice Age Trail is more than a path through the woods. It is a place for mental and physical rejuvenation, a place to unwind after a hard day and enjoy the landscape of Wisconsin. More than 2.3 million people use the Ice Age Trail each year to hike and snowshoe, to backpack, to disconnect and reconnect.
Behind the scenes, a vibrant community of volunteers across the state work to build and maintain the Trail, making it one of the country’s best hiking experiences.
Course Rules
1.) Live by the rules of the trail. Keep to the right when coming up to a hiker, runner, individual. Give the faster individuals the right of way.
2.) NO LITTERING! Anyone caught littering will be disqualified from the event and future events. Leave no trace, only footprints.
3.) Runners will yield when making road crossings and will cross in a safe manner.
4.) Crew can support runners at all aid stations along the route. Pacers are allowed to join their runner at the nearest aid station after dark (4:36pm on event day). This change in 2024 supports the safety of all runners on the course. Pacers must have a pacer bib and will be accounted for at all times.
5.) Crew must obey all parking signs at the start/finish and aid stations. Any crew caught not following the rules will result in their runner be disqualified.
6.) Basic first aid kits are at each aid station. We deem the right to pull any runner for medical reasons, at any time.
7.) If you cut the course, you must back track to the point you cut off and complete the intended course in full.
8.) You and your crew are responsible for knowing the racecourse rules.
9.) Participants are expected to carry their own items or use the items available at the aid stations. No muling for other races or from your pacer.
10. There is a required gear list for 2025.
11.)*NEW for 2025* There will be NO course markings in 2025. Aid station markings will stay but along the Ice Age Trail there will be zero (0) markings. This in particular came about due to the massive snow in 2024. The snow hid markings and as it melted it exposed flags that had not been picked up. This is not being a good steward to the Ice Age Trail and our environment. We strive to leave no trace and with that in mind we have decided to drastically reduce our potential footprint by not putting out course markings.
