A Trail Running Getaway in the Blue Ridge Mountains
The Blue Ridge Running Retreat blends adventure, training, and relaxation into one unforgettable mountain weekend. Hosted by 12th State Endurance, this three-day experience invites runners to explore some of the best trails in Northwest North Carolina while staying in comfortable lodge accommodations surrounded by scenic mountain views.
Unlike traditional trail camps that send runners back to tents or rustic cabins, this retreat focuses on balance—challenging runs during the day followed by relaxation, great food, and time to enjoy the mountains with fellow runners. It’s a chance to push your limits on the trails while still enjoying a comfortable, social retreat atmosphere.
Course & Daily Running Adventures
Each day of the retreat features a guided trail run designed to showcase a different side of the Blue Ridge region.
Day 1 – Remote Parkway Trails (~10 miles)
The weekend kicks off with a remote run adjacent to the Blue Ridge Parkway. Runners will navigate quiet forest trails with moderate elevation gain, stream crossings, and long stretches of peaceful woodland. A knowledgeable local guide leads the way through this lightly traveled area before runners cool off with a refreshing river soak at the finish.
Day 2 – Scenic & Historic Trails (~8 miles)
The second day highlights some of the region’s most beloved running trails. Participants will take in scenic viewpoints and historic landmarks while also discovering lesser-known “hidden gem” trails that many visitors overlook. The day ends at a local swimming hole—perfect for relaxing after a rewarding run.
Day 3 – Signature Mountain Run (~7 miles, optional additional miles)
The final run showcases one of our favorite routes in the area, combining smooth running trails with some of the best mountain views of the weekend. Runners can enjoy a roughly seven-mile route or extend the adventure with down connecting trails for those wanting to finish the retreat with extra mileage.
Accommodations and Support
All runs are guided trail runs, ensuring participants can focus on enjoying the trails without worrying about navigation. Transportation to and from each trailhead is included, with runners shuttled from the lodge to the day’s route.
At the lodge, runners will have access to pre-run breakfast options such as bagels, muffins, pastries, and snacks. After each run, participants return to the lodge where a freshly prepared lunch is served by an on-site chef. During lunch, short coaching presentations will cover topics like training strategies, racing tips, and nutrition.
Our lodging is not an afterthought, but a true standout of the retreat experience. Outside the deck offers stunning views, while inside you can enjoy a game room and comfortable living area. The king suites offer beautiful views and private bathroom that is truly worth the upgrade. The queen rooms offer privacy. The bunkroom offers great views, but more modest shared accommodations. Regardless of your room, you will still enjoy all of the same amazing experiences. The Runner Experience
This retreat is as much about community as it is about running. Evenings and afternoons offer time to relax, explore the surrounding area, or connect with fellow runners. The lodge features comfortable accommodations and shared spaces where participants can unwind, enjoy mountain views, and build new friendships within the trail running community.
Beyond running, guests can explore other local activities such as hiking, trout fishing, golf, and sightseeing in the surrounding Blue Ridge region as well as visit local wineries and restaurants.
