ROO Last Man Standing

ROO Last Man Standing is a backyard ultra set on nearly 2,000 acres of private land in Clancy, Montana, at Ponderosa Ranch, starting and finishing at Dutchman Creek Events Center. The property sits at the edge of the Elkhorn Mountains, offering a rugged and scenic setting for one of the simplest and most brutal formats in ultrarunning.

This is not a race against the clock.

This is a race against everyone else.

And eventually, against yourself.

The Format

ROO Ultra follows the classic Last Man Standing backyard ultra format.

Every hour on the hour, runners begin a 4.2 mile loop.

Complete the loop within the hour and you earn the right to start the next one.

Finish early and you get the remaining time to rest.

When the next hour begins, everyone who is still in the race lines up again.

Miss the start.
Miss the time cutoff.
You’re done.

The race continues until only one runner remains.

To win, the final runner must complete one final loop alone.

No time limit.
No set distance.
Just the question of how long you can keep going.

The Course

The course is a 4.2 mile loop run entirely on private ranch property.

Expect a mix of ranch roads and trail terrain with sweeping views of the Elkhorn Mountains. Each loop returns to the central race hub where runners can reset, refuel, and prepare for the next hour.

Day turns into night.
Night turns into morning.

The loops keep coming.

Crew and Support

Each runner may have up to four crew members.

A designated crew area will be available where runners can set up small tents, chairs, coolers, and personal support stations.

While some race supplies may be available, runners are responsible for bringing enough food, hydration, and gear to support themselves for the duration of the race.

Backyard ultras can last well beyond a traditional race distance. Planning and crew strategy can be just as important as fitness.

Who This Race Is For

This race is for runners who enjoy the mental side of endurance.

For runners who can stay patient while others go out too fast.

For runners who know the real race often begins long after most people have dropped.

Loop by loop.
Hour by hour.

Until one runner remains.
