The Sheriff’s Shootout

Saddle up and get ready to throw down—The Sheriff’s Shootout is back for its second wild ride in the rugged high desert of Montezuma County, Colorado. On October 18th, when the clock strikes High Noon, the lawmen and outlaws of the trail running world will toe the line for a gritty endurance showdown through canyon country. With dramatic views of Mesa Verde and the imposing Sleeping Ute Mountain, this lap-based ultra isn’t just a race—it’s a true test of grit, spirit, and stamina.

Course Description

Set on a rugged one-mile loop, the Sheriff’s Shootout dares runners to complete as many laps as possible within their chosen time limit—6 or 12 hours. But don’t let the short distance fool you: each lap packs a punch. Steep ascents test your climbing legs, rocky descents rattle your knees, and the terrain keeps you on your toes from start to finish. From each high point, you’ll be rewarded with wide-open vistas of the Southwest’s most iconic landscapes—stark desert cliffs, piñon-juniper woodlands, and those timeless Western skies.

The course is designed to bring the action close to camp, with the main aid station and crew area accessible every mile, making this race as crew-friendly as it is runner-tough.

New for This Year: Team Division

This year, The Sheriff’s Shootout is introducing a team format for added camaraderie and strategic fun.
6 Hour Pursuit: Teams of two can trade off laps however they like.
12 Hour Jail Break: Teams of four work together to survive the full day.
If you think you got what it takes, both 6 and 12 hour races are open to individual Lawmen and Outlaws as well.
Whether you’re flying solo or riding with a posse, strategy, endurance, and teamwork will all come into play.

Aid Station and Runner Support

At the heart of the course lies a fully stocked aid station ready to keep you fueled and focused lap after lap. Expect all the trail running essentials—hydration, salty snacks, sweet treats, and a solid helping of local hospitality. With the course looping back every mile, you’ll have consistent access to nutrition, gear changes, and moral support.

And as night falls, the vibe shifts. The bonfire roars to life, spectators cheer runners into the darkness, and the spirit of the old West comes alive under a starlit sky.

Race Experience

The Sheriff’s Shootout is more than just a race—it’s an endurance showdown with character. With ample camping and spectating areas along the course and at the central hub, this event is as much a celebration as it is a competition. Come for the run, stay for the community, and maybe even linger a little longer by the fire.

Costumes and cowboy hats are encouraged—just don’t forget your trail shoes. Come Hell or high water, guns will be fired at High Noon, and you’ll want to be ready.
