Assault on Yonah
Come run, hike and or ruck 2.5 ish miles from the bottom to the top of Yonah with us the last Sunday in September each year.
How hard can it be?
It’s 1650 vertical feet from the bottom to the top of Yonah Mountain in less than 2.5 miles. Why do we do it? Because the epic view at the top is that much better when you earn it.
As we say, the juice is worth the squeeze.
All runners upfront will be trying to break 30 minutes. Most people hiking will take 45 minutes to an hour and a half.
You are only timed from the bottom to the top.
Once you finish, hang out taking the views, take photos and then hike or jog at your own leisure back to your car.
*** please note there is no race from the top back to the bottom*** you are only timed from the bottom to the top.
Ruck
For all those competing in the ruck division you are required to carry the minimum following weight:
Women - 15 pounds
Men - 20 pounds
You are allowed to carry more if you want to challenge yourself further, this is just the minimum that we require.
Run Bum Races
RunBumTours.com aka Run Bum Races, has been putting on safe and fun trail races for over 15 years now. We pride or selves on well marked, fun and scenic races in the South East.
We hope you come and run this event as the first of many of our races.
Safety
We HIGHLY recommend that you have grippy trail shoes especially if it has been raining or the trail is wet.
Parts of this race are non technical or gravel dirt road but other sections are rock gardens. You can slip.
This event is NOT recommend for those who are not in shape, elderly or pose as a fall risk. The event goes up the mountain one way however you must get yourself back down the mountain under your own power.
If you live in a flat area we recommend that you hit the gym twice a week for 20-40 minutes on the stair master. This will help tremendously.
The time limit for the event is 2 hours 15 minutes....no exceptions. After that time you will not be given a time and be a DNF. We will also have a cutoff at the first overlook / Old heli pad of 1 hour 15 minutes. If you do not make this you will be turned around there. All subject to change.
We want to keep everyone safe and happy, especially the local Ems!
Give back
We help maintain the trail on Yonah Mountain and have cleared countless trees off the trail. We also regularly cutback overgrowth on the trail. You running this race helps keep the trail clear. THANK YOU!
Swag & awards
All finishers get a medal. To be guaranteed a medal you must be registered by September 15th. Top three male and female finishers get a custom handmade award.
If you want a shirt those can be purchased separately and can be done so prior to August 30th here on the Ultra sign up page above by clicking "Store". We do not mail anything out prior to or after the race. It must be picked up in person.
Course breakdown
We will park everyone at the parking area then walk down to the paved road and start at the very bottom of the gravel driveway road. The race will start there.
From the start it’s immediately uphill. It’s about a 0.3 miles with 175 ft gain to the trailhead then it’s onto single track.
That climb to the top can be divided into 3 sections.
Bottom, middle and top.
All of these sections gain a lot of elevation.
The bottom:
The bottom of the climb isn’t too bad but has some rocky bits. It’s the most gradual of the entire mountain and you have fresh legs.
It even has some flatter sections.
The middle:
This likely has the steepest and most technical bits of the mountain however there are some sections for 30-100 ft where it gets flat and even a small downhill in a section.
Below the old heli pad it’s very very rocky and one section you might need to use your hands to maneuver up. From the old helipad it’s .1 miles of 35% grade aka the steepest part.
Eventually you turn right onto a gravel road thus entering the top section
Top section:
While this is steep it’s not the steepest. It’s also a pretty constant 12-20% grade. You legs are also exhausted. This is about .75 miles of this as you wind around the mountain and eventually finish a top the summit in the field where we have a finish line set up!
