About Black Lung Ultra Marathon
Back for the 4th annual event, the 2027 Black Lung Ultra is set for September 11th, 2027. Nestled at the entrance of the David Thompson corridor through the Rocky Mountains lies the once bustling mining town of Nordegg, AB. With a rich history, excellent tourism opportunities and amazing hospitality, Coliseum S&E presents the opportunity to see Nordegg and her surroundings in all her beauty. A rugged 62km, 3 leg Ultra Marathon will test the best of the best. Named after the perils of working long shifts in coal covered darkness, The Black Lung Ultra Marathon will take you through a journey through history, along mountain ridges and through the friendliest community in Alberta.
The Course
The Black Lung Ultra is a Clover style course, meaning the 3 legs of the race start and finish at the same spot. This makes for a great vibe at the start finish line, as well as easy to run self supported. If you have a crew, they can drop you at the start line and wait there for the day! We will have food trucks and a beer gardens for your team to enjoy while they wait!
Leg 1 "Coliseum Mountain"
This leg takes runners to the peak of one of the most renowned mountains in the area. The counterclockwise climb up the backside of the mountain is fairly technical, including a short ladder to traverse a cliff and a steep descent down a rocky face on the other side of Coliseum's Ridgeline. The total elevation gain of 1078m makes this leg the toughest challenge right off the bat.
Leg 2 "for the 29 in the Mine"
Leg 2 honors the memory of the 29 miners lost in the 1941 Nordegg mine disaster. The route presents a balanced challenge for both individual racers and teams, including mostly single track. Participants will commence in the town, head south for the ascent of Nordegg Mountain, navigate a descent, and finish with a return through the historic rail trail back to town.
Leg 3 "Collieries Closer"
The final leg of the race, "Collieries Closer," offers a lighter but engaging route. Participants will venture east of the town through a series of multi-use trails, turning south after a forestry truck road. A unique highlight is the trail that heads through Nordegg’s historic Collieries, balancing elevation gains with the final descent into town.
