Tussey Mountainback Race Weekend 2026: Oct. 23 - 24
The 2026 race will be held on Saturday, October 24th. This is a change from our normal Sunday run. Keep an eye on our website for schedule details.
Start Time / Planning Your Weekend
The schedule will be out soon, keep an eye on the web site and details here. We will start the individual ultra distances at 0700, Saturday. Relay teams and the half-marathon will follow. Packet pickup will be the day before at the venue and race morning for individual 50 mile or 50km runners. All others others must get packets on Friday.
Format
All courses are a loop on mostly unpaved fire roads through central
Pennsylvania's scenic Rothrock State Forest during peak foliage season. The 50 mile and 50 km are together for the first 19 miles.
Ultramarathons, there are support
vehicle and drop bag options. Stocked, staffed aid stations are available to all participants at aid stations every 2.9 to 5.6 miles along the course.
Team Relay: The 50M
relay course uses the aid stations as runner transition points. Relay teams must
select and provide a specific runner rotation order, rotating to the next runner at each transition
point, and maintain that same order through the race. ALL teams must provide ONE team
vehicle to transport runners to transition points where the batons are exchanged. No exceptions.
Individual Categories: Individual runners are male, female, or non-binary. Age-wise, if you are over 40 on race day, you are eligible for the masters category; otherwise you are in the open age category. Choose some combination of this during registration.
Relay Categories: Likewise, teams are male, female, non-binary, or mixed. Age-wise, if you are over 40 on race day, you are eligible for the masters category; otherwise you are in the open age category. All runners must fit in the same category to be eligible for that category, e.g. 8 guys aged 39 are a men's male team. Seven guys and a woman over 40 are in the mixed masters category.
Course
The races take place on mostly unpaved roads in Rothrock
State Forest. About the last 5 miles of the 50 miler is on pavement, downhill. All distances begin and end with 0.6 miles of pavement. The terrain includes uphill, level, and downhill grades, with shaded and open segments
and some overlook vistas. The 50M loop course takes in Whipple Dam State Park, Alan Seeger
Natural Area, Penn-Roosevelt State Park, Colyer Lake, and Bear Meadows Natural Area. Total
Elevation Gain: 5,485 ft for the 50 miler.
