Cancelled Event

COVID-19 - What now

As the outbreak continues to cause cancellation after cancellation we are preparing for various scenarios. First off if we are forced to cancel we will offer a 100% roll over (excluding shuttles) to all registered runners OR a 50% refund (excluding fees & shuttle). This decision will be made on May 22, 90 days out from race day.

If we are fortunate to move forward with the race you will see and be alerted to changes that will occur within every aid station. These details will be spelled out on our aid station page on the Castle Peak website.

Its great to hope for the best but know there is a looming "but" out there still.

The 2020 Castle Peak 100k is a Western States 100 qualifying race. A 20 hour cut-off is needed for a WSER qualification. The Finish Line cut-off is 21 hours at 2:00 AM.
2020 Castle Peak 100k finishers earn 4 points towards 2021 Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc® qualification.

The Castle Peak 100k is arguably one of the most difficult trail races in the country. Masked by its spectacular beauty, this is a true mountain race unlike any other on the ultra-running circuit. A rare point-to-point course offering genuine support with fully stocked Aid Stations that is staffed by Truckee/Tahoe locals and experienced ultra-running volunteers. The race starts near the historic Emigrant Trail in Truckee, California at the Prosser Ranch Group Campground before ascending over 16,000' at an average elevation of 7,300' above sea level. The course travels over roughly 95% of demanding single-track trails, while journeying through some of the most dramatic scenery and vistas the region has to offer.

The course will take you through the Tahoe National Forest, Tahoe Donner, and Euer Valley, prior to climbing Hawk's Peak. Traversing along the Donner Lake Rim Trail you'll enter the hidden beauty of the Warren Lake Loop before summiting Basin, Castle & Andesite Peaks. You'll then enter the notorious Hole in the Ground trail, exiting into the famous Royal Gorge Cross Country Resort, then ascending and running along Razorback Ridge. Enter the infamous Palisades!* By way of Crow's Nest, this 1.25 mile section of scrambling, requires true grit. After your test of courage, you'll arrive at the summit of Mt. Lincoln and Judah, before your final descent into the finish at Sugar Bowl Resort. Click here to view all the details on the Castle Peak 100k website.

*All course specifics are subject to change pending final permits.

Castle Peak 100k is produced by the Donner Party Mountain Runners, an all-volunteer non-profit organization. Thank you for supporting our mission to inform, inspire, and connect mountain runners in Truckee-Tahoe. We will be communicating course preview options throughout the summer.

Special Advisory

Devil's Oven (Mile 33.5): Due to the remoteness of the Devil’s Oven Aid Station (Mile 33.5), there will be VERY LIMITED WATER and fuel options at that location. Participants will need to fill up on supplies at the Johnson Canyon (Mile 24.5) and Summit Lake (Mile 28.2) Aid Stations.

Palisades (Mile 57): The 1.25-mile Palisades section includes very technical, risky & exposed scrambling. This may not be appropriate for those with a fear of heights. The Palisades section will be staffed with safety volunteers at key sections, in addition to guide ropes to assist participants through this segment of the course. Passing or over-taking within the Palisades will only be allowed during daylight, and only at locations specified by safety personnel. LED lights will be attached to course markings for all sections of the course that may be travelled in the dark.
