Carson Canyons Half Marathons

Long Ranch Park

Carson City, NV 6.7 Miler, 1/2 Marathon

This Event Took Place Sat. Apr 1, 2017

Half Marathon Course Description

The race start is located at Long Ranch Park in Carson City. From the park, runners will head north on Longview(paved road) for .57 miles before turning left onto Ash Canyon Road and begin their uphill climbing. Ash Canyon Road stays paved for approximately a half mile before turning to dirt when passing the water tanks. At mile 2.5 runners will hit the first of 2 aid stations before heading down onto single track and crossing over Ash Creek. Once over this bridge, the course begins climbing up several switchbacks in and out of Ash Canyon before traversing across the face of the mountains overlooking Carson City. This section of course will provide runners with spectacular views of Carson City and beyond. After ~4.93 miles of steady climbing, runners will reach tree line and this year stay left and run on a new section of single track until they hit the Waterfall Road AS at mile 8. It is ~5.2 miles to the finish from this last AS. Runners will cross the road back onto single track and immediately cross over another bridge. After crossing the bridge runners will enjoy 1.68 miles of more single track before entering onto another dirt road. From there runners will continue straight and downhill. In approximately a half mile they will turn right through a green gate and onto another dirt road. This road descends quickly with a short but steep uphill climb before turning left onto the final single track trail leading them towards the finish. Once back down to the housing development, runners will enter onto pavement, safely cross Kings Canyon Road and enter onto a bike path adjacent to Longview for a quarter mile to the finish line. According to my new Epson Runsense 810, there is a little over 2600' of climbing on this course. There is only 1 steep hill near the end, the rest of the course is all low grade very run-able gradual climbing and descending.

Half/Half Marathon(6.7M) Course

New for 2017! Carson Canyons will now offer a half/half marathon option. The Half/Half route circumnavigates Carson City's iconic C-Hill in a clockwise direction and has over 1300' of climbing. The last 2 miles join the half marathon course down Longview Canyon trail to the finish.

Update 3/26/17

I was just up on the half marathon course yesterday and wanted to give everyone an update. There are still some areas on the half course with snow at the higher elevations and northeast slope faces. Most areas are passable but there are some areas that have a high angle slope with long run offs having the possibility of a dangerous slide if one falls. It is really dependent on ones experience and comfort level but I am really not willing to take that kind of risk of someone possibly getting injured. There are also some areas with deep post-holing. If the race were today I would go with our plan B option but it is supposed to be a warmer week with the chance of some showers which should accelerate the snow melt. I will make the decision on Thursday after I get out to some of those sections to re-evaluate. Half Marathon course plan B will have just as much vertical and will be just as much fun and will avoid the deeper snow sections. Another issue to be aware of is road damage from flooding. A couple of the jeep roads to set up aid stations and to access higher portions of the trail in case of emergency have received considerable damage and are closed. If we use the existing half marathon course be prepared to carry water and fuel for the last 10 miles of the course. If we use plan B route there will be aid at approximately mile 4 and mile 9. Race day weather looks to be about 65 degrees with sunny skies! I will continue to post updates this week on the website, Ultrasignup, Instagram and Facebook.

Update 3/30/17

Looks like it will be plan B for the half marathon course. The half/half course has no snow and will remain unchanged. The half marathon course will be an out and back entering and finishing from longview canyon trail. The route will consist of jeep road and single track, pass by and above a waterfall, feature spectacular views of the valley, and have over 3500' of climbing! It will have a few small sections of snow at the high point of the trail. It's going to be a beautiful day!

Aid Stations

Plan B alternate route 2017 for the half marathon course will have one aid station that runners will hit twice.
Half Marathon - There will be 2 A/S's out on the course. The first is ~2.5 miles from the start before entering onto the single track. This A/S is water only. The second A/S is at Waterfall Road ~5.4 miles from the finish. This A/S will serve water, Nature's Bakery Fig Bars, and other salt/sugar snack type food for refueling. This is a no cups event so every runner must carry a water bottle to refill and receive water at the A/S's.

Half/Half Marathon - There are no aid stations. You will need to carry your own fluids and nutrition.
