UPDATED 4/27/18 - CAPACITY INCREASE
We're pleased to announce that we're adding 50 spots to the event! With the increase in runners, the biggest hurdle in August will be parking at the start/finish. Since Y1, we've done our best to ensure the greenest event possible and to encourage carpooling, which will become more important than ever this year. We'll also have alternative transportation available to ensure we don't exceed our parking capacity that we'll be announcing the details of in the coming months.
Here's how the additional spots will work at this point in time with the our current wait list. Our total capacity will now be 300 runners with 150 being allocated to the half and 150 to the 7mi/4mi combined. Currently, there's more than 150 runners in the half but that number always lowers as runners switch distances so for the time being, no half waitlisters will be invited until that number drops below 150 and half spots open.
Waitlisters signed up for the 7mi/4mi have all been sent an email invitation this morning. Click Accept and the registration will be processed and the card charged...click Decline and the registration will be removed and the spot moves down the list. Per race policy, they have 5 days to respond to their invitation. Any invites not responded to at the end of the 5 days will be removed. At that point, however many of the 150 spots for the 4mi/7mi that are still available will be opened up for folks to sign up for like normal.
The short version of it is as follows:
1.) If you're on the waitlist for the 7mi/4mi, please check your email that you signed up with and respond ASAP to the invitation email you should've received this morning. You have five (5) days to respond before it gets passed to the next person.
2.) If you're registered for the half and know for sure you intend to switch to the 7mi or 4mi, please let us know!
3.) If you're on the waitlist for the half, you'll likely eventually get a spot but it might take a little longer so if you would rather switch to the 7mi/4mi and get into the race sooner, please let us know and we'll get that worked out.
Come join the MoS crew for 4mi, 7mi and half marathon distances on some of eastern Iowa's best and most challenging trails! The routes through Mines of Spain will challenge you with their difficulty and inspire you with their beauty as they climb the bluffs for views of the Mississippi, make their way through tall grass prairies and weave through dense hardwood forests.
The terrain is a diverse mix of dirt single and double track and wide prairie grass trails. There are some rocky, technical sections of trail as well as a few steep climbs but much of the course is smooth and runnable with just rolling hills to contend with.
Course GPS Activities/Maps:
Aids stations will have water and Tailwind Nutrition drink (Mandarin Orange flavor, mixed 100 calories per 12oz). There are two manned stations and one unmanned station.
4mi (1.5), 7mi (1.5 & 3.0) and half (1.5, 3.0, 5.1, 7.0 & 10.1) Cups are not provided so please carry a handheld bottle or wear a hydration pack, especially those running the half marathon.
In keeping with the beauty of the natural environment, the races will be as environmentally-friendly and sustainable as possible with local food and beer along with cup free racing and a zero waste approach from pre race to post race.
Profits will be returned to the Friends of the Mines of Spain to help maintain the trails.

We will also again be hosting a free Mini-Mines Trail Race for kiddos ages 12 and under Friday evening during packet pickup. The Mini-Mines race will start at 6:30pm and there is no pre-registration required. We just ask that you show up early by 6:15pm Friday night to sign your little runners in.
When? Packet pickup - Friday (8/10) from 5PM-7PM and pre-race Saturday (8/11) from 6:30AM-7:15AM.
Races - Saturday (8/11) starting at 7:30AM.

Why? Because running on trails is awesome!
Runners are encouraged to carpool or ride their bike as parking is limited and we want to limit our impact. Water and Tailwind Nutrition drink (excellent source of calories and nutrition) will be provided on the course along with some basic sweet/salty snack foods. All runners are strongly encouraged to bring a handheld water bottle or hydration pack as we are a cup free race and there will be no disposable cups provided on course.
We want to be as sustainable as possible while keeping our registration fees as low as possible and providing the highest value to runners so we make shirts optional. We will have a custom short sleeve race shirt available as a $10 add on to registration for this year's event. It will be a great fitting, soft cotton/poly blend for casual and everyday wear. All registered runners get a beautiful, challenging and well marked course along with a fun post-race that includes door prizes, free local craft beer and delicious hot food from a local vendor!
4mi/7mi - $20 registration (no shirt)
Half marathon - $30 registration (no shirt)
No paper form and no morning of registration. Online registration only.

We hit initial capacity in about 3 hours last year and will more than likely be in a similar situation this year. When that happens, runners should continue to register through Ultra Signup if they'd like to be added to the wait list. Runners will be added to the event as spots become available in the order they joined the wait list. They will be notified via email of their selection.
If the race fills and pre-registered runners later realize they're unable to participate, please let us know ASAP via e-mail (firstname.lastname@example.org) or the Mines of Spain Trail Races Facebook to open up spots for those on the wait list. A full deferral to next year's race is available to any runner who lets the race knew in writing that he or she is unable to attend this year's event AND receives written confirmation of the deferral from the race. Please note, the deferral is good for ONE year only. The deadline for the deferral option is Wednesday, July 11th. All deferrals will be notified of early registration opening up (early March of the following year) via the email address used to register this year. Deferrals will have the week of early registration to redeem their deferred entry which will expire when general registration opens at the end of that week.
Switching distances is allowed up until Thursday night before the race if switching to a longer distance. If switching down to a shorter distance, Friday night's packet pickup is the deadline. Any changes in distance can be done by the runner ahead of time by logging into their UltraSignup account. There are no refunds for switching to a shorter distance and the participants must pay the difference in price if switching to the half marathon from a shorter distance. No distance switching is allowed the morning of the race
