About the CV 50/50
The Colossal Vail 50/50, presented by Fleet Feet Sports-Tucson, is a combined 55 kilometer/50 mile event using a beautiful high desert section of the Arizona Trail east of Tucson, Arizona, near the community of Vail. The fast and fun course, and the support along the way, was designed by experienced members of the Tucson Trail Runners to give new ultra runners the best chances of completion, while giving experienced runners a good day as well. We give awards to the top three male and female finishers in each event and every finisher receives a coveted engraved railroad spike for making it across the finish line. Because the course is two out-and-back segments, 50 mile runners can complete the 55K route, then get finisher’s credit for that event and an award if they choose not to complete the full 50M.
Africanized bees have become a hazard at the CV 50/50. They were attracted to the food and fluids at all aid stations and the start/finish. Several people were stung. We're implementing various mitigation strategies, but the entomologists we've consulted think they're likely to continue to be an issue. If you are allergic to bee stings, you should consider another event. Please let us know if you do choose to attempt the run and bring proper medication with you on the trail.
CUP-LESS FOR 2018. In an effort to reduce our environmental impact and the number of bees hovering around open cups of soda at aid stations, we will become a CUP-LESS event this year. There will be reusable cups available for purchase at packet pickup or feel free to bring your own!
The run starts in La Posta Quemada Ranch in Colossal Cave Mountain Park (CCMP), heading south along the scenic eastern boundary between the Sonoran and Chihuahuan Deserts, with open spaces and striking vistas. Runners reach the northernmost ridges of the Santa Rita Mountains, then come back to La Posta Quemada (LPQ) Ranch. The 50 mile entrants continue on, to be met at the north turn around by volunteers with water 1.25 miles from the boundary of Saguaro National Park. There are a total of 5 aid stations along the routes, 4 of which get used twice by the runners. Those are well stocked and managed by experienced ultra runners who understand what you need. Tailwind Nutrition is our Official Hydration Sponsor, and you'll be able to refill your bottle, flask or hydration pack along the way. We're going CUPLESS this year for the benefit of the environment and to minimize bee activity at aid stations, so either bring your own bottle or purchase a soft flask or collapsible cup at packet pick-up. Along the way, the bike patrol team organized by our media sponsor Cirrus Visual Communication will keep an eye on everyone. At 10:00 AM while the adults are out on the course, we’ll have a free 1 mile run for kids and families. There will be quality food and drink at LPQ, with a party into the night for those who hang around. Food and drink are complimentary for runners and volunteers, available for purchase by family and friends.
The course is very runnable and fast. Keep in mind the shorter distance is 5K (3.1 mi.) longer than a standard 50K. The 50M is exactly 50 miles. There will be no question of your accomplishment. We will continue to keep the rattlesnakes out of the tunnel under Interstate 10, although there's no telling who else you might meet.
We set the event date to take advantage of the wonderful fall weather in Arizona, which is normally sunny with highs in the 70s in mid-November. There’s plenty of lodging in nearby Tucson, and a few guest houses and ranches in Vail. Camping is encouraged, and there is plenty of room near the start/finish line (no charge). The CV 50/50 raises awareness of the Arizona National Scenic Trail and proceeds benefit the Arizona Trail Association. Please come run with us.
For an event like CV 50/50 to be successful, we need lots of volunteers. There are many different ways to help, before the event and on race day. All volunteers get a t-shirt and a delicious meal at the finish line. If you have time and inclination to help, please drop a note to Angela Greynolds, volunteer coordinator, at email@example.com.
No refunds will be given for any reason. However, pre-event cancellations accompanied by a signed letter from the participant's physician that supports a legitimate health limitation which prevents the participant from safely running in the event will result in the transfer of registration fee to the following year, less a $20 processing fee. Cancellations must be made at least two weeks in advance of the event date. You can also transfer your registration to another event in the Arizona Trail Running Series.
Discounted registration is available for members of the Arizona Trail Association, military veterans, Native Americans, and youth under 18 years of age. Contact the Race Director for a coupon code with proof of one of the above if you're eligible.
