June 15 - 17, 2018

The Broken Arrow Skyrace, "Where the Mountains Meet the Sky"

The Broken Arrow Skyrace, presented by Salomon, is a three-day event held at world-famous Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows. On June 15-17th, 2018 elite and recreational participants will experience an unforgettable trail running experience “where the mountains meet the sky.” The Broken Arrow consists of three iconic distances that showcase the beauty of Lake Tahoe, the Jewel of the Sierra Nevada and the high alpine trails of Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows.

Designed in the vein of the classic European Skyraces, the Broken Arrow Skyrace represents a unique style of mountain running, characterized by off-trail scrambling on steep terrain with massive amounts of vertical gain and loss at altitude....with exposure, hand lines, a ladder and snow slopes thrown in for good measure!

The Broken Arrow Skyrace features three distances: a 52K, 26K and Vertical K. These races are unique in California as most of the terrain is above treeline. Runners will be treated to spectacular views of Lake Tahoe’s emerald-blue waters and Squaw Valley's unmistakable high-alpine terrain. Elite and recreational participants will run and then celebrate together with first-class food, craft beer, music, films and fun activities for the whole family.

Vertical Kilometer "VK" Course:

The June 15th Broken Arrow Vertical Kilometer or "VK" is slated for Friday, June 15th at 11am. The price for the VK is $50.

The VK covers some of Squaw Valley’s most iconic terrain in a short, steep, and physically demanding sprint. From the valley floor, runners will ascend over 3,100 feet in a mere 3.1 miles to the summit of 9,000-foot Squaw Peak. In true Skyrunning fashion, the course begins on steep terrain, ascends more steeps and technical off-trail talus, and finishes on an exposed ridge line. This is the most iconic portion of the race, complete with stunning views of Lake Tahoe, a bolted hand line, and the infamous "Stairway to Heaven" ladder to the top of Squaw Peak.

The Vertical Kilometer course will contain steep slabs of rock, potential snow slopes, scree and exposure. While it is attainable by all runners, it may not be the best choice for those afraid of heights or exposure. This is not your average trail run...but it is one you will remember forever! Please note that you must be 16 years of age or older to run our VK.

26K Course:

The Broken Arrow 26K will be run on Sunday, June 17th at 7am. The price for the 26k is $100. The Broken Arrow 26K covers a world-class loop that showcases some of Squaw Valley's most famous terrain.

From the valley floor at 6200 feet, runners will ascend more than 5,000-plus feet as they circumnavigate the heralded terrain of North America's most rugged and extreme ski resort. In true Skyrunning fashion, the course is characterized by a plethora of vertical gain over a technical and physically demanding landscape that is mostly above tree-line.

Along the way, runners will be treated to the jagged terrain of KT-22, unrivaled views of the Granite Chief Wilderness, and the inspiration for the course, the Broken Arrow, as well as the most iconic portion of the race, the infamous "Stairway to Heaven" ladder to the top of Squaw Peak.

The course will contain steep slabs of rock, potential snow slopes, scree and exposure. While it is attainable by all runners it may not be the best choice for those afraid of heights or exposure. This is not your average trail run...but it is one you will remember forever! Additional course description is available on our website. Please note that you must be 16 years of age or older to run the 26K.

52K Course:

The Saturday, June 16th Broken Arrow 52K is the signature distance of our three-day event. The price for the 52k is $145 through December 31st and $160 from January 1 through May. Register early and save!

This iconic distance features a challenging, world-class race course that showcases Squaw Valley's most extreme and scenic terrain. From the valley floor at 6200 feet, runners will ascend more than 10,000 feet as they traverse the rugged terrain of one of North America's most iconic ski resorts. In true Skyrunning fashion, the course is characterized by loads of vertical gain and loss through technical and physically demanding terrain. Most of the course is above tree-line.

Runners will be treated to the jagged terrain of KT-22, unrivaled views of the Granite Chief Wilderness and the inspiration for the course, the Broken Arrow, and the most iconic portion of the race, the infamous "Stairway to Heaven" ladder to the top of Squaw Peak (twice!). The course will contain steep slabs of rock, potential snow slopes, scree and exposure. While it is attainable by all runners it may not be the best choice for those afraid of heights or exposure. This is not your average trail run...but it is one you will remember it forever!

After the inaugural event in 2016, many runners, including Salomon athlete Max King, called the event "the hardest event of it's type in North America."

Additional course description is available on our website. Please note that you must be 16 years of age or older to run the 52k.

Cancellation/Refund Policy:

The race organizers reserve the ability to cancel or alter the event due to unsafe weather. Race organizers will make the best decisions when it comes to protecting the safety of all runners. This means we reserve the right to adjust, cancel, reroute, OR reschedule as we see fit, without exceptions or parameters.

Because the bulk of our costs come before the event even occurs we will not be able to extend refunds to those who wish to cancel their registration. In the instance of biblical weather and/or a force mejeur, we will assess things appropriately.

After June 1st any request to change the distance you are registered for will be allowed, but will incur a $25 service fee. No distance changes will be allowed after June 10th.

Race registration is non-transferable and cannot be rolled over to subsequent years, unless extenuating medical or life circumstances occur. However, we understand life can get in the way of racing. As such we are happy to offer a $25 roll-over option until May 1st, 2018 for the 52k only. From May 1st through June 1st the fee is $50. There is no roll-over option after June 1st, 2018 and this is not an option for the 26K or VK. Please email the race director if you need to utilize this option.

Online registration closes at 1159pm Monday, June 11th. On site registration will be available at Squaw Valley on Friday (9am-5pm), Saturday (430-530am) and Sunday (530-630am). Prices for the 26k & 52k increase $25 for day-of registration (not applicable to the VK).
