June 15 - 17, 2018

The Broken Arrow Skyrace, "Where the Mountains Meet the Sky"

The Broken Arrow Skyrace, presented by Salomon, is a three-day event held at world-famous Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows. On June 15-17th, 2018 elite and recreational participants will experience an unforgettable trail running experience “where the mountains meet the sky.” The Broken Arrow consists of three iconic distances that showcase the beauty of Lake Tahoe, the Jewel of the Sierra Nevada and the high alpine trails of Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows.

Designed in the vein of the classic European Skyraces, the Broken Arrow Skyrace represents a unique style of mountain running, characterized by off-trail scrambling on steep terrain with massive amounts of vertical gain and loss at altitude....with exposure, hand lines, a ladder and snow slopes thrown in for good measure!

The Broken Arrow Skyrace features four distances: a 52K, 26K, 10K (new for 2018) and Vertical K. These races are unique in California as most of the terrain is above treeline. Runners will be treated to spectacular views of Lake Tahoe’s emerald-blue waters and Squaw Valley's unmistakable high-alpine terrain. Elite and recreational participants will run and then celebrate together with first-class food, craft beer, music, films and fun activities for the whole family.

Vertical Kilometer "VK" Course:

The June 15th Broken Arrow Vertical Kilometer or "VK" is slated for Friday, June 15th at 11am. The price for the VK is $50.

The VK covers some of Squaw Valley’s most iconic terrain in a short, steep, and physically demanding sprint. From the valley floor, runners will ascend over 3,100 feet in a mere 3.1 miles to the summit of 9,000-foot Squaw Peak. In true Skyrunning fashion, the course begins on steep terrain, ascends more steeps and technical off-trail talus, and finishes on an exposed ridge line. This is the most iconic portion of the race, complete with stunning views of Lake Tahoe, a bolted hand line, and the infamous "Stairway to Heaven" ladder to the top of Squaw Peak.

The Vertical Kilometer course will contain steep slabs of rock, potential snow slopes, scree and exposure. While it is attainable by all runners, it may not be the best choice for those afraid of heights or exposure. This is not your average trail run...but it is one you will remember forever! Please note that you must be 12 years of age or older to run our VK.

10K Course:

The June 17th Broken Arrow 10K (5.9 miles) is slated for Sunday, June 17th at 9am. The price for the 10K is $60. The course is 9.5 km (5.9 miles) with ~620m / 2040 ft. of vertical.

The Broken Arrow is all about community, both elites and recreational runners, and as such we want to celebrate runners of all types! Accordingly, we've added a new distance for 2018, our 10K! While our other distances are Skyrace caliber events the 10K is a gateway drug to those longer and harder distances. If, perhaps you are just getting into trail running or are intimidated by the other events, this is your race!

The course for the Broken Arrow 10K starts from the European arch in front of Coffeebar in the heart of the Squaw Valley Village. After the start gun runners head through the Village and east up single track trails along the Western States trail toward CA Highway 89. After 2 miles the course exits onto a dirt two-track that heads up and over Knob Hill and then up to the top of Snow King Peak.

Runners then travel back down a ~1 mile steep ~730 ft. descent to the Easy Street aid station below KT-22. At this point runners are about 4 miles into the race. The north facing parts of Snow King may still have some areas of snow on the descent into Easy Street.

Out of the Easy Street aid station, runners continue down the road for a few hundred feet before turning left back onto the Western States single track and winding along the side of KT-22 over to cross the Mountain Run dirt road. On the other side of the road, runners hang a right and descend the technical Thunder Mountain Trail back into the village and the finish line.

All ages of runners are welcome, but children under 16 will require an adult to run with them in order to participate.

26K Course:

The Broken Arrow 26K (16.2 miles) will be run on Sunday, June 17th at 7am. The price for the 26k is $100. The Broken Arrow 26K covers a world-class loop that showcases some of Squaw Valley's most famous terrain. The cutoff for the 26k is 7 hours and the race starts in the heart of Squaw Valley on Father's Day!

From the valley floor at 6200 feet, runners will ascend more than 5,000-plus feet as they circumnavigate the heralded terrain of North America's most rugged and extreme ski resort. In true Skyrunning fashion, the course is characterized by a plethora of vertical gain over a technical and physically demanding landscape that is mostly above tree-line.

Along the way, runners will be treated to the jagged terrain of KT-22, unrivaled views of the Granite Chief Wilderness, and the inspiration for the course, the Broken Arrow, as well as the most iconic portion of the race, the infamous "Stairway to Heaven" ladder to the top of Squaw Peak.

The course will contain steep slabs of rock, potential snow slopes, scree and exposure. While it is attainable by all runners it may not be the best choice for those afraid of heights or exposure. This is not your average trail run...but it is one you will remember forever! Additional course description is available on our website. Please note that you must be 16 years of age or older to run the 26K.

52K Course:

The Saturday, June 16th Broken Arrow 52K (32.3 miles) is the signature distance of our three-day event. The price for the 52k is $145 through December 31st and $160 from January 1 through May. Register early and save! The race begins at 7am in the heart of Squaw Valley. The cutoff for the 52k is 13 hours.

This iconic distance features a challenging, world-class race course that showcases Squaw Valley's most extreme and scenic terrain. From the valley floor at 6200 feet, runners will ascend more than 10,000 feet as they traverse the rugged terrain of one of North America's most iconic ski resorts. In true Skyrunning fashion, the course is characterized by loads of vertical gain and loss through technical and physically demanding terrain. Most of the course is above tree-line.

Runners will be treated to the jagged terrain of KT-22, unrivaled views of the Granite Chief Wilderness and the inspiration for the course, the Broken Arrow, and the most iconic portion of the race, the infamous "Stairway to Heaven" ladder to the top of Squaw Peak (twice!). The course will contain steep slabs of rock, potential snow slopes, scree and exposure. While it is attainable by all runners it may not be the best choice for those afraid of heights or exposure. This is not your average trail run...but it is one you will remember it forever!

After the inaugural event in 2016, many runners, including Salomon athlete Max King, called the event "the hardest event of it's type in North America."

Additional course description is available on our website. Please note that you must be 16 years of age or older to run the 52k.

Cancellation/Refund Policy:

The race organizers reserve the ability to cancel the event due to unsafe weather. Race organizers will make the best decisions when it comes to protecting the safety of all runners. This means we reserve the right to adjust, cancel, reroute, OR reschedule as we see fit. Because the bulk of our costs come before the event even occurs we will not be able to extend refunds to those who wish to cancel their registration. In the instance of biblical weather and/or a force mejeur, we will assess things appropriately and fairly, to the best of our abilities.

We allow you to change your chosen race distance until May 31, 2018. If you decide to run a longer (and more expensive) distance, you will be required to pay the difference. However, no refunds will be given if you choose to drop to a shorter (and less expensive) distance. No changes are allowed after June 1, 2018.

Race registration is non-transferable and cannot be rolled over to subsequent years, unless extenuating medical or life circumstances occur. However, we understand life can get in the way of racing. As such we are happy to offer a $50 credit towards the following year until May 31, 2018 for the 52k only. There is no roll-over option after June 1st, 2018 and this is not an option for the 26K, 10K or VK.

We REQUIRE that you "withdrawal" from the race on Ultrasignup. Not doing so voids any and all rollover options.

Online registration closes at 1159pm Monday, June 11th. On site registration will be available at Squaw Valley on Friday (9am-5pm), Saturday (430-530am) and Sunday (530-630am). Prices for the 26k & 52k increase $25 for day-of registration (not applicable to the VK).
