The 16th annual Wasatch Powder Keg backcountry race will be held on February 23-25, 2018 at Brighton Ski Resort. The Powder Keg is a test of speed, strength, and endurance for any backcountry skier. This year will feature 3 races and racers have the option of doing any or all 3 races.
There will be a BBQ, awards ceremony, and raffle following the Saturday race at the Milly Chalet. For 2018, the Powder Keg will once again be partnering with the Utah Avalanche Center to offer backcountry clinics and events. Friday will be a Sprint race followed by the mandatory pre-race meeting for the Saturday race.
Saturday will be the traditional Powder Keg race. As always, the race will have captivating views of Heber Valley, Mt Nebo, Mt Timpanogos, and the Cottonwood Canyons. Any racer with a ski/binding weight of 1,450g (51oz) or less, must race the Race division. In 2018, we will once again have a Junior division that will race their own course.
Sunday - The Technical Teams Race is back for 2018. We are designing a completely new course so stay tuned for course details.
Powder Keg Divisions
The Sprint race will have a Senior and Junior divisions with categories for male/female.
The Saturday Powder Keg race will have categories for male/female as well as the 3 divisions in each category. Please note the new minimum weight regulation for the Heavy Metal Division.Junior- 3 climbs, 2,400' climbing, 5 milesRecreation- 4 climbs, 3,500' climbing, 6 miles
Heavy Metal - 6 climbs, 6,500' climbing, 11 miles .
Any racer with a combined ski/binding weight of 1,450g (51oz) or less, must register for the Elite division. Elite - 6 climbs, 6,500' climbing, 11 miles
The Sunday Technical Teams Race will have male and female elite categories (no junior, recreation, or heavy metal categories). Race stats are pending, but the race will be >8,000' ascent.
