This event started when I rode this route in 2013, the entire time I wondered if a hardy trail runner would be faster than a mountain biker. Then in 2015 we put this to the test with the first 7 Summits mountain bikers vs trail runners. In 2015 the first person to finish was a rider but there was much controversy associated with his time, many complaints that he did not follow the designated route. This just lit the fire for the next year and lots of trash talking. Oh and I forgot to mention that we had a 50% DNF rate... This course is tough!
In 2016 we had a small but competitive group including top rider Cully Todd (bike record of 7:32:09) and top runner Heath Wiltse ( run record of 8:58:34). It was fun to watch these two lay it all out. All of the runners and riders were fun to watch and talk to after the event! This is more than just a ride or run covering over 50 miles, this is an adventure.
The course will be a 53 mile trail run/ mountain bike ride. We will leave from Canfield in Coeur d"Alene and finish at Farragut State Park. This is not an easy run or ride, 53 miles with over 13900' of elevation gain/ loss. We start at the Nettleton Gulch parking lot at 5:00 am for runners and mountain bike riders riders. There is VERY limited parking, so please car pool or plan ahead. From the parking lot we climb the west and east Canfield Buttes, then Huckleberry Mountain, Spades Mount, South and North Chilco Peaks, and finally Bernard Peak. The course is mainly single track and dirt roads. We finish at Farragut State Park. I am camping at the Whitetail Loop in site #45 after the event so please feel free join me. I will have food, beer, and a finisher prize for you. We even have a few spots for tents.
