Frosty Fat Sass

374 Walker Road

West Orange, NJ 6hrs, 3.1 Miler, 3hrs

This Event Took Place Sat. Jan 26, 2019

UPDATE 1/4/21: We just spoke with the County about the event and we both agreed that Governor Murphy is very unlikely to change the current Executive Order prohibiting outdoor gatherings over 25 people. So, we are transitioning the race to "semi-virtual". We will mark the 5K loop on Thursday/Friday/Saturday/Sunday/Monday so you can get out there on your own to run the race! This is a self-supported fat-ass anyway, so if anything - it's now more convenient in that you can do the race when it works best for you between Thursday 1/14 - Monday 1/18!

The Frosty Fat Sass is a fat-ass event for runners who love the cold (or runners who hate the cold but need to sign-up for an event because they need the accountability to keep running through the winter) and are ready for a physical and mental challenge! Runners can sign-up for a 5k, 3 hours or 6 hours. The 5K loop starts and finishes at the Turtleback Rock Picnic Area off of Walker Road in West Orange, NJ at the South Mountain Reservation. Your $25 registration fee is going DIRECTLY in the hands of the South Mountain Conservancy, an awesome local non-profit that preserves the South Mountain Reservation and provides great educational and recreational opportunities for the community! We have raised over $9,000 for the Conservancy over the past 2 years! With the current NJ Executive Order limited outdoor gatherings to 25 people or less, we have transitioned this event to "semi-virtual". The course will be marked from Thursday 1/14 - Monday 1/18 for you to get out there on your own to complete the event. Because this event is a fundraiser, we will NOT OFFER REFUNDS. PLEASE UNDERSTAND THAT BEFORE YOU REGISTER, THANK YOU!

This is a runner, walker, hiker friendly event. You can come out to the course on at any time/day from Thursday 1/14 - Monday 1/18 to complete the race! For the 3 hour and 6 hour events, if the timer ends before you complete the loop, the loop does not count.

This is a self-supported fat-ass event! No finishers' swag, no aid stations and no whining (unless you don't see Sasquatch, then you can whine a little). To be included in the final results on Ultra Sign Up, runners/hikers must submit a .gpx or Strava link that shows their map and TOTAL TIME (not just moving time). ALL RUNNERS/HIKERS ARE REQUIRED TO HAVE A MASK OR BUFF WITH THEM AT ALL TIMES. MASKS AND SOCIAL DISTANCING ARE REQUIRED AT THE SOUTH MOUNTIAN RESERVATION. WHENEVER YOU PASS ANOTHER RUNNER OR PARK-USER, PLEASE PULL UP YOUR MASK! AGAIN, WHENEVER YOU PASS ANOTHER RUNNER OR PARK-USER, PLEASE PULL UP YOUR MASK!! We have worked hard to establish safe events the past year and do not want to jeopardize our relationship with the county. Thank you!

There are portapottys at the start/finish area. The course will be marked from Thursday 1/14 - Monday 1/18: Start on the Hillspur trail. When the trail splits, stay left to continue onto Longwood Trail. Turn right onto Reservoir Road Trail; the Girl Scout Camp will be on your left (if you run through the camp or if you hit a road, you missed the turn!). At the bottom of the mountain, follow the orange trail markers to make a right onto Reservoir Trail. At the first split, keep left to stay on Reservoir Trail. Reservoir Trail will turn into the white-dot Zoo Loop Trail. After the trail becomes a single track, turn right onto connector trail (marked by orange duct tape). Take this all the way up to the parking lot, turn right to stay on the grass (the portapottys will be on your left) back to the start/finish. There's 289 ft of gain. You can check out the whole course here:

Q: Do I have to have a mask with me?

Q: Can I bring my dog?
A: Now that the event is semi-virtual - yes you can. All dogs must be kept on-leash at the South Mtn. Reservation (did you know it's actually a law in NJ?)

Q: Can I sign my kids up for the Frosty Fat Sass?
A: Yes! This is a family friendly event. Please email us if you want to register your kids and we will send you a code to get them signed up for $10 each.

Q: What's the weather like in West Orange, NJ in January?
A: Cold. Snow. Maybe Hail. Little bitty stingin' rain, big ol' fat rain, rain that flies in sideways, and sometimes rain that comes straight up from underneath. Dress warm. Bring layers. Be smart. Last year we had awesome weather in the 50's!

Q: What food should I bring?
A: 15 Dr. Pepper's, a box of chocolate, peas and carrots, shrimp-kabobs, shrimp creole, shrimp gumbo, pineapple shrimp, lemon shrimp, coconut shrimp, pepper shrimp, shrimp soup, shrimp stew, shrimp salad, shrimp and potatoes, shrimp burger, shrimp sandwich.

Q: Well that's an interesting combination...
A: Bring whatever you enjoy eating during a race.

Q: I could get lost in a brown paper bag. Will the course be marked?
A: Mama always had a way of explaining things so I could understand them. So YES, we will mark the course just like Mama would so you can understand which way to go. We will have bright colored ribbons along the course and plenty at all of the turns. The course will be marked from Thursday 1/14 - Monday 1/18.

Q: What is the 5K loop like?
A: 83.870% doublewide trails and 16.130% singletrack trails. Plenty of hills, rocks and roots. Check out the map and elevation profile up top in the picture gallery. The end of the loop takes you behind Turtleback Zoo; you'll hear the Zoo train whistle all morning and although you can't see the animals from the trail, you might hear them!

Q: Are there restrooms at the start/finish area?
A: There are portapottys in the parking lot next to the start/finish area.
