Arrowhead Ultra 135
2021 Arrowhead Ultra 135 is canceled. We held Arrowhead in 2019 during the Polar Vortex when much of the country was shut down. We received tons of press world wide. One of the interviewers asked me if we would ever cancel the race. I said "I can't imagine a scenario in which we would ever cancel the race, the possible exception would be a massive snowstorm that would prevent emergency vehicles from accessing our check points". Along came Covid 19.
It is in the best interest of our racers, volunteers, sponsors, and community that we cancel the race. The current and extended MN Governor's orders (see below) also prevent us from holding the race.
From our website race rules tab: We do not normally offer refunds of entry fees. If we have to cancel the race we will refund ~$150 of a racer’s entry fee. The balance will be used to cover fixed costs and donated to race charities.

The Arrowhead 135 is recognized in the book "The World's Toughest Endurance Challenges" by Richard Hoad and Paul Moore as one of the 50 toughest races in the world. It is a human powered Ultra Marathon taking place in the coldest part of winter in the coldest city in the lower 48 states. Our average finish rate is less than 50%, the finish rate for new racers is much lower. 2019 finish rate was 35%.
135 miles Deep Winter across Northern Minnesota on rugged, scenic Arrowhead State Snowmobile Trail from Frostbite I-Falls to Tower, MN Fortune Bay Casino. Pick your mode of transport at start: bicycle, ski or foot. This is our 16th year of Arrowhead - we attract some of the best winter ultra-athletes in the world.
Historically coldest gosh darn race anyplace even the Arctic, check our average temps, virtually every year luck has us -30 to -40C/F, we have frostbite to prove it. Snowstorms are another possibility! Arrowhead 135 is an organization of local folks dedicated to the promotion of human powered ultra-endurance events across beautiful Arrowhead Region of Northern Minnesota. Our Race Mission is fostering national and international amateur endurance sports such as winter-biking, skiing and trail running.
Our goal is to offer, fun, educational, yet challenging ultra-endurance event in extreme trail and weather conditions for economic and health benefit of communities in Northern Minnesota.
Our entry fee is modest and monies left over from race expenses are donated to Special Operations Warrior Foundation Charity, providing college scholarships to children of US Spec Ops Soldiers killed and wounded, Together For Good providing short-term respite to children in need, and the Falls Food Shelf. We also contribute to snowmobile trail maintenance along the Arrowhead Trail.
We limit our roster size in order to maintain solitude on the trail and to keep our check points from becoming over crowded. We cannot accept all entries. Preference is given to race veterans and past volunteers. ALL applications will be added to a wait list and reviewed. You will receive a confirmation from Ultrasignup if your application is accepted. If you don't get a confirmation in a short time please check your e-mail spam folder. You will not be billed until you confirm acceptance. We will keep a small wait list.
