SAND SQUATCH

Join us on Saturday May 1, 2021 at Island Beach State Park in Seaside Park, NJ for our second annual SAND SQUATCH BEACH RACE! One of the few 100% beach races offered in NJ, we are excited to offer several different events at the 2021 Sand Squatch! Our race is a part of the park’s MAY DAY FESTIVAL AND PET EXPO! The Festival and Pet Expo features craft vendors, food, music, family fun, and more! This is the one Sassquad event that we allow and encourage runners to bring their (leashed) dog with them!

RACE DETAILS

Runners can sign-up for a 4-miler or an 8-miler. This year we are also hosting a 1 mile DOGGIE DASH!

Doggie Dashers will run 1/2 mile out and back to complete the 1 mile

4 and 8 mile runners will run down to the water and go 2 miles out to the right and back (that will conclude the 4 mile event) and then the 8 milers will continue to run 2 miles out to the left and back.

Here is the order of events:
3PM 1 mile Doggie Dash start (check-in between 2PM-2:30PM)
4:00PM 4 mile and 8 mile start (check-in between 2:30PM-3:30PM)

Runners are allowed to run with their dogs for the 4 and 8 mile event. Please review the Doggie Guidelines below!

COVID-19 INFO

Our squatchtastic "Dream Team Extreme" has been tirelessly working out all of the details to make this trail party safe, fun and an all-around squatchy time. This means that we will be making some adjustments... Here are the details you need to know before you register for this trail party!

- We are accepting runners/hikers from any state that is NOT on the NJ Travel Advisory List. This list is updated often, so please take a look at it before you register. Non-NJ Residents who are registered for our event need to make sure their state is not on the list, the day that they travel to NJ. If you register for our race, and your state is added to the list, we will give you a 100% credit towards any 2021 or 2022 event (again, we will not offer refunds). https://covid19.nj.gov/faqs/nj-information/travel-and-transportation/which-states-are-on-the-travel-advisory-list-are-there-travel-restrictions-to-or-from-new-jersey
- Although we do not anticipate this, in the event that the state pulls the permit, we will give all pre-registered runners/hikers a 100% credit to any 2021 or 2022 Sassquad event. Please note, this means that we are not offering refunds on the non-refundable registration fee.
- The all-you-can-eat buffet, AKA Aid Station, will include all pre-packaged food. Although we don't love the waste this adds to our footprint, we are making every effort to reduce touch-points at the event. You are welcome to bring your own food/water! Our volunteers will also fill all water bottles/hydration packs for runners during the race.
- Runners/hikers will use a mask during check-in, at the start of the race and at the aid station. All runners will need to carry a mask/buff with them and should use them anytime you cannot stay 6 feet apart from other people.
- Please wait until 5 minutes before the start-time to come towards the starting line. If you are more comfortable waiting a few minutes for other runners/hikers to leave, you are more than welcome to start the race a few minutes late.

FAQ's

Q: Can I sign my kids up for the 4-miler or 8-miler Sand Squatch?
A: Yes! This is a family friendly event. If you want to sign your kids up for the 4- or 8-miler runs, you'll need to stay with them the entire time. Be sure to register your child separately and agree to the waiver for minors. And make sure to keep track of little Luke and Leia before during and after the event. We only have 1 search-party and they're already out there looking for Sasquatch.

Q: What's the weather like in Seaside Park, NJ in May?
A: Well, it will be another unusually mild day with a Leia of cloud covering the shoreline, but if you Luke father west you will be seeing a glimmer of sunshine, if you're wookiee. However, there will be a fairly light breeze, the force is strong though for the east side of the island and then later that night the weather strikes back as a deep area of low pressure pushes in from the west, creating storm-like conditions. Don't be a trooper, please take care on the roads, it could be difficult driving conditions. Now, if you're forced to awaken early that morning, it will be on the dark side but as you can see, fairly mild with temperatures in double digits. Far, far away to the south-east of the island, there's a new hope for some sunshine developing in the afternoon.

Q: Are you serious?
A: Yes. A Jedi must have the deepest commitment, the most serious mind...... Average temps are in the high 60's. It's usually windy on the beach so bring a light layer with you.

Q: I could get lost in a brown paper bag. I'm scared I'll get lost on the beach. Will the course be marked?
A: Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering. Just follow the flags and you won't get lost.

Q: What is the course like?
A: Runners will start on the BEACH! After running down to the water, runners will go about 2 miles down to the left and run back to the start/finish to complete the 4 miles. 8 milers will go back out and run 2 miles down to the right and back to the start/finish.

Q: I don't want to run, are there any volunteer opportunities?
A: Yes! We always need Sassy Volunteers! Click the "Volunteer" button at the top of the page!

Q: If I sign up for the 8 mi but don't feel like running another loop once I finish the first one, can I stop running?
A: I find your lack of faith disturbing. But yes, of course you can drop down to a 4 mi.

Q: I don't like sand. It's coarse and rough and irritating and it gets everywhere. Should I still sign up for the race?
A: Let the past die. Kill it if you have to. That's the only way to become what you were meant to be.

Q: Talk to me about finishers' swag! What do I get to take home with me after I finish the race?
A: This one a long time have I watched. All his life has he looked away... to the future, to the horizon. Never his mind on where he was. Hmm? What he was doing. Hmph. Adventure. Heh! Excitement. Heh! A Jedi craves not these things. You are reckless!

Q: Ok Yoda, enough with the Star Wars Quotes. Tell me about the SWAG!
A: Ok, Ok.... Well, besides memories that will last a lifetime, every runner will receive a handmade squatchtastic wood medal and a finishers' item! We will have squatchy awards for the top 3 male and female runners!

Q: Are there restrooms at the race?
A: Yes, there are "real" (not portapottys!) restrooms, next to the start/finish area.

Q: I can’t make it to the race anymore, can I get a refund?
A: Unfortunately we do not offer refunds for our events. Thank you for understanding!
