DOUBLE SQUATCH

Double the Squatch, double the fun! Join us on Saturday March 13th and/or Sunday March 14th, 2021 at Stokes State Forest for the DOUBLE SQUATCH as we support the New York-New Jersey Trail Conference! One of the few races of its kind, the Double Squatch is a 2-day event where runners can test their limits and see how many miles they can cover in one or two days. Runners and hikers can sign up for a 5K, 3H or 6H on one or both days! Do you have what it takes to run for hours on Saturday and then come back and do it all again on Sunday??? This is the perfect event for ultra runners who need those back to back long runs! How many miles can you Squatch in two days?

RACE DETAILS

This is a runner/hiker friendly event! Runners/hikers can sign up for one or both days and do whatever combination of events they desire. You can only choose 1 event per day as all three events begin at 9am; don't be THAT runner who registers for 2 events on the same day......

The schedule of events is identical for both Saturday March 13th and Sunday March 14th:

5K and 6H start at 10AM, check-in from 9AM-9:30AM
3H starts at 1PM, check-in from 12PM-12:30PM.
****REMEMBER, DAYLIGHT SAVING IS ON SUNDAY MARCH 14****

For the 3 hour and 6 hour events, if the timer ends before the runner completes the loop, that loop does not count.

For runners/hikers who sign up for the 3H/6H on Saturday AND Sunday, their loops will be combined for a Saturday/Sunday total. Runners/hikers who sign up for the 5K on Saturday AND Sunday will have their times combined. So, not only will we have overall top finishers for Saturday and Sunday, we will also have COMBINED Top Finishers for Saturday+Sunday. Top finishers for each division will receive a Squatchtastic Handmade Award! Here are the following categories:

Top Female/Male - Saturday 5K
Top Female/Male - Saturday 3H
Top Female/Male - Saturday 6H
Top Female/Male - Sunday 5K
Top Female/Male - Sunday 3H
Top Female/Male - Sunday 6H

Top Female/Male - Saturday + Sunday 5K
Top Female/Male - Saturday + Sunday 6H (3H+3H)
Top Female/Male - Saturday + Sunday 9H (3H+6H)
Top Female/Male - Saturday + Sunday 12H (6H+6H)

COURSE DESCRIPTION

The event starts and finishes at the Kittle Field Day Use Area. When you arrive at the main entrance for the park, follow signs for “Kittle Field Day Use Area”. The 3.2 mile lollipop course has 350 ft of gain. There is a nice mix of double wide and singletrack trails. There is a .40 mi section in one of the climbs that is technical and may cause even the fast Squatchers to slow down a little. You can see the elevation profile in the picture gallery at the top of the page. The course will be well-marked with bright ribbons. We will be following the Stony Brook Trail (brown) to Blue Mountain Trail (blue) to Silver Mine Trail (orange) and then back to Stony Brook Trail (brown). You can see the loop on Strava here: https://www.strava.com/segments/19781645

***The course will run CLOCKWISE ON SATURDAY AND COUNTER-CLOCKWISE ON SUNDAY! That's right, we will reverse the course on Sunday!

NEW YORK-NEW JERSEY TRAIL CONFERENCE

We are proud to partner with the New York-New Jersey Trail Conference! We will make a donation to the Trail Conference after the event using proceeds from the Double Squatch. The New York-New Jersey Trail Conference is a volunteer-powered organization that builds, maintains, and protects public trails. Did you know that 400,000 volunteer hours over the past 5 years have gone into building and maintaining trails, monitoring invasive species, creating maps and guidebooks, and more? Yeah, that's pretty squatchtastic! Trail Conference members can receive 10% off of registration; please email jennifer@nynjtc.org for the discount code!

STOKES STATE FOREST - CAMPING

Are you traveling pretty far to get to the Double Squatch? Don't want to drive back and forth each day? Reserve a camping spot at Stokes and enjoy a night or two under the stars. Stokes State Forest offers tent and trailer sites with fire rings and picnic tables. There's also 9 enclosed 10' x 12' lean-tos with fire rings and picnic tables and have a wood stove inside for heat; these are open year round. Visit https://www.njportal.com/DEP/NJOutdoors to reserve your camp site!

FAQ'S

Q: Can I bring my dog?
A: Sorry, but Lassie has to stay at home for this race. Our liability insurance does not cover dogs; thank you for understanding!

Q: Can I sign my kids up for the Double Squatch?
A: Yes! We want the WHOLE family to come out to our events! We have a special discount code for families registering 3 or more Squatches in the same household. Please email us (sassquadtrailrunning@gmail.com) before you register so we can give you the code! Once you have the code, be sure to register your child separately and agree to the waiver for minors. And make sure to keep track of little Daniel-San before during and after the race. We only have 1 search-party and they're already out there looking for Sasquatch.

Q: What's the weather like in Branchville, NJ in March?
A: Balmy. Cold. Snow. Hot. Rain. The weather in NJ has been crazy all year. Keep checking the forecast as we get closer to the event. Bring layers. Be smart. Last year we had SNOW!

Q: This will be my first back to back race. Can you share some race-strategies with me?
A: Sweep the Leg.

Q: Ummmm... What?
A: Do you have a problem with that? No mercy.

Q: I'm just looking for some race advice....?
A: Wax on, right hand. Wax off, left hand. Wax on, wax off. Breathe in through nose, out the mouth. Wax on, wax off. Don't forget to breathe, very important.

Q: What food will you have at the aid station?
A: We will have a spread of Ultra favorites, water and water + electrolytes. Chips, candy, fruit, PB&J; basically the diet of toddlers and endurance athletes. We will not have gels at the event, so please BYO-gels if you want to fuel with liquid sugar.

Q: I could get lost in a brown paper bag. Will the course be marked?
A: We will have bright colored ribbons along the course and plenty at all of the turns. We will also do our best to mark the ground for each of the turns (this depends on the snow/rain situation).

Q: What is the 5K loop like?
A: The loop is a mix of loose gravel, dirt, rock and roots. It's not very technical, but provides enough of a mix that runners will need to stay tuned in on every loop. The course will run clockwise on Saturday and counter-clockwise on Sunday!

Q: I don't want to run, are there any volunteer opportunities?
A: What is the problem Mr. Lawrence?

Q: I just said that I don't want to run... Can I volunteer instead?
A: Yes! We always need Sassy Volunteers! Click the "Volunteer" button at the top of the page!

Q: Are there restrooms at the start/finish area?
A: Yes, there are restrooms with running water at the start/finish area.

Q: Will I have easy access to my car?
A: There is 1 small lot next to the start/finish area and a larger parking lot that is about .25 mi walk. We recommend bringing whatever you’ll need for the race to the start/finish area. There’s a large covered pavilion and plenty of picnic tables for you to leave your gear.
