The state COVID-19 outdoor recreation guidelines prohibit in-person registration on the day of the event. We understand this may be a bummer to some, but following the guidelines helps everyone stay safe.

19.5M: 8:30AM
7.6M: 9AM
5K: 10AM

Safety Rules and Updates

Pre-Race Safety Briefing: Will be a video linked to in the pre-race e-mail.  

Face Coverings Required: At start/finish area plus on trail if 6 feet of physical distancing cannot occur. No covering needed on trail if over 6 feet apart from all other people.

Check-in: All runners will first check in with a COVID-19 safety supervisor for a symptoms check and to make sure the COVID-19 waiver/acknowledgement is signed by the runner.

Bib pick-up: Contactless. Staff will inform runners of their bib numbers, then runners will grab their bib from the string at the bib pick-up tent.

Staggered Start: We will start in ~5 person waves, spaced at least one minute apart. For each distance, we will ask a) fastest runners start first to promote physical distancing on trail and b) check-in as close to your distance start time as you feel comfortable with. We encourage women with hopes of a podium finish to join in the fastest waves. For example, 50k first wave of ~5 runners will start at 8AM, with each wave starting at least one minute after the prior wave until all 50k runners are on course.

Timing: We will account for the staggered start, so runners are not penalized for starting in the last waves of their distance.

Aid Stations: We ask all runners to bring their own bottles/hydration packs. At aid stations and start/finish, please hand your bottle/pack to the staff. They will fill the bottle, then return it to you. We will have pre-packaged, individually wrapped aid station foods (standard ultra fare of chips, cookies, bananas, gels, etc.) that runners will grab themselves.

Post Race: We will have post-race individually packaged food. Please phsyically distance at least 6 feet apart. Per state guidelines, no awards ceremony, pizza, or beer garden. 

Cut-Off Times: Will be based on an 8 hour 50k time. We will assume the last 50k runner is on course by 8:30AM. If a 50k runner starts later than 8:30AM, we will base the 8 hour cut-off times on the start time of the last runner.

Race Information

Thanks to runners like you, the Cougar Mountain Trail Run Series has raised over $170,000 for King County Parks and contributed many hundreds of hours of trail work. Join Seattle Running Club and Northwest Trail Runs in carrying this legacy forward and making this 14th annual event bigger and better than ever!

Just 15 minutes from Seattle, King County's Cougar Mountain Regional Wildland Park is one of the most popular training grounds for area trail runners and the Seattle Running Club. The course builds on itself throughout the series and brings runners through a lush forest of fern-lined single-track trails, over hills and along marshes and wetland habitats. This is a great series to supplement the training regime for a fall marathon or ultra. Cougar Mountain features rolling hills, a few moderate climbs and a few steep but short inclines.

The summer Short Series and Long Series races are held the 2nd Saturday of May, June, July, and August. The Fall races are held on the last Sunday in October. Series standings are updated after each month's races and everyone competing in each successive distance is eligible for Series awards. There is a participant cap and the races tend to sell out, so register early!5,000

A Greener Event: No Cups!

Again, this year the series is continuing to reduce the amount of trash created during the event. In 2019, we ask that runners bring a refillable water container with them on the trail to use at aid stations along the way. Our friends at Shoes-n-Feet, Seven Hills Running, and Fleet Feet Sports Seattle have a variety of hydration products.

No Dogs Please.

Very important announcement: Dogs are not allowed on the course due to USATF Sanctioning and
Insurance Requirements. Despite the parks policy on dogs on leash being acceptable, USATF
has determined dogs on course cause a potentially unsafe environment for
participants and spectators. We love our dogs and remember Scott's dog Jack attending Cougar
races for years and years. But we want to continue hosting races for years to come and need
to abide by the USATF rules.
