Get Outside 8 Hour

705 Cedar Street

Smithfield, VA 8hrs

Registration closes: Sun, Nov 21 @ 11:59 PM

About the Get Outside 8-Hour

The Get Outside 8-Hour is at Windsor Castle Park in Smithfield, VA. It's a companion race to the Windsor Castle 10-Hour hosted in June and designed as a chance for you to "Get Outside" rather than stay indoors and cyber shop or continually nibble on leftover Thanksgiving dinner items :-). The days after Thanksgiving are a time where those in the sports and outdoor groups are encouraging people to get outside, stretch your legs, and enjoy nature rather than worry about battling shoppers indoors as well as online.

This is your chance to get in a nice long run or walk on an approximately 3 mile trail. The final distance will be posted once the course details are complete, along with the elevation gain (estimated at 150 feet each loop).

The run is hosted through "It's Just A Training Run" and so feel free to come out and race the course to see how many miles you can get or just enjoy time on your feet and getting some nice miles walking and running along with about 99 others.

This is a low-key event, however laps will be counted and we'll be keeping track of your miles so go for it!. We'll have awards for the top finishers, along with a home-made finisher's medal for all runners. We will have hydration and a variety of yummy pre-packaged “ultra-type” food items for runners, along with a few other items (hot soup later on in the day, runner item requests). Our ability to serve different food options is dependent on COVID restrictions and volunteer numbers. We will not have an aid stations on the course mid-lap (but you don't need it - it's a 3 mile lap.

Runners are able to set up chairs or tents (no larger than 10x10) near the trail.

Cost & Refunds

There are no refunds if you cancel your registration. However, if you know you need to cancel, please do so as soon as possible to allow people on the waitlist an opportunity to run. We anticipate being full, with a waitlist.

Registration is $50 until June 30. July 1 - September 30 - $65. Oct 1 - Race - $75

About the run itself

Check in begins at about 7:00 am. Final time being determined.

We will have a waved race start between 8:00 and 8:30 am, with waves starting every 5 minutes. While you can start later, your time begins at your assigned wave time.

Everyone is asked to be respectful of one another and wear a mask over your mouth and nose always in the staging/check in area (if you're not able to wear a mask we respectfully ask that you not join this training run event). Runners are also required to wear a mask while passing other runners. More COVID protocols will be shared in the weeks leading up to the run. Runners will be required to turn in a COVID screening questionnaire at check in.

We will have water available for runners (COVID pending water bottles versus a cooler set up) and yummy nutrition items that are typical at an ultra (most likely bags of potato chips, gummy snacks, candy, granola bars).

Temperature: Fall temps in Hampton Roads late November tend to be in the 50s, but it could vary so be sure to check the temp forecast leading up to the run. We will run rain or shine.

The run is approximately 3 miles (we are finalizing the course) and covers a very easy, navigable trail loop. There are two street crossings, however there is very minimal traffic in this area. The course will be marked. (The park is open from dawn to dusk, so your call if you want to max out the time it's open if you're looking for a longer training run. Please contact the race director to make arrangements if you intend to do this.

All finishers receive an engraved pint glass. We will have awards for top miles for the first three women and first three men. Runners must be on site to receive their award. These will be handed out immediately after the run ends (and we finalize the tally). *We do not ship. If there is a tie in miles, the award will go to the runner who ran the miles the quickest. Those running a marathon, 50k, and 50 miles will also be given a certificate to recognize their mileage efforts.

If you have family or friends that might want to cheer you on they'll definitely want to check out everything that's happening in the community. It's also super close to other wonderful tourist destinations if you're looking to make this a "race-cation", such as Colonial Williamsburg, Busch Gardens, and Virginia Beach.

Sweet Shirts

We'll have a shirt option and you can snag a sweet shirt for just a few bucks. Please add this at checkout - we'll need at least 20 to keep the pricing at the cost we have it for, so consider supporting a small business (Colonial Sports in Williamsburg) and order a cool shirt.
