New for 2021
Hey folks, a couple of new things for 2021.
First, no price increase. I don't think I've increased the price for several years now. It's not always about the money.
Second, yes, the race will be on FRIDAY, November 5th. The 50K will start at 8:00am at White Rock Bay, and the Half Marathon will start at 9:00am at the Fielding Garr Ranch.
Starting in 2022, the park is not allowing any special events to happen on the weekend or holidays. This is due to the huge increase in visitors over the past couple of years. When I first starting race directing out there back in 2006, annual visitors numbered around 250,000. Just in 2020 the annual number of visitors was well over 800,000.
So, I decided to get a jumpstart on the no weekend thing and hold this race on a Friday.
The 50k will be one loop. The cool thing about this race is that you will get to go out on the west side of the island and run where the general public rarely goes.
There will be only one drop bag location at the Nine Mile Gate aid station. If you want other info on the race, there's plenty on the race website. For course maps, check the pictures on this page.
For those of you familiar with the Buffalo Run course, you’ll be able to follow along. For those who have never run the Buffalo run, most of this stuff will make absolutely no sense without a map. Oh, and the race start is at 8am sharp.
Basically the course goes like this. Start at White Rock Bay, just like the Buffalo Run. Go out and up the hillside, once you get to the switchback you go left. Then you keep running out to the Elephant Head aid station. This will be about 5.5 miles. Once past Elephant Head, you'll go own death valley just like the Buffalo Run, then up the switchbacks. Once you get to the top of the switchbacks, turn right and go over the saddle and down into red rocks canyon. Follow the single/double track along the west side of the island and down to the shoreline.
The trail will then turn uphill and take you to the North Sentry aid. You gain about 1000’ along here. From here you’ll go behind Sentry peak, then down the dirt road to the ranch. We’ll have an aid station beyond the ranch at a place called 9-mile gate. From the ranch you’ll follow the Mountain View Trail north. You’ll also find an aid station at the Lower Frary parking lot. Once you get to the north fence, you’ll bushwhack up along the fence to the dirt road, then follow the road back to the start/finish area. Anyway, eventually you end up back at the White Rock Bay trailhead and the finish line.
The half marathon will start at the Fielding Garr ranch and head north along the Mountain View Trail until you get to the fence. Basically flat and fast for the first 11 miles, then a small uphill. Turn left and follow the signs along the dirt roads to get you to the finish line.
Won’t that be fun!
Refunds, Rollovers, and Transfers
Here is the policy
I will refund your entry fee PROVIDED the race is full and there is someone on the wait list to take your spot.
This refund is available up to approximately 30 days prior to the race.
If the race is not full, then there is no refund. Within 30 days there is no refund available.
How do you get a refund? Just send me a note through the website contact page.
There are no rollovers for any Buffalo Run Adventures races.
The entry fee you pay is for this year’s race and covers this year’s supplies, fees, insurance, etc. Yes, I know other races allow rollovers, those races clearly have more money to burn than I do.
The best thing to do is to get a refund if the race fills.
Transfers are allowed provided the transfer is made through ultrasignup. Informal or unofficial tranfers are not allowed. It's a liability issue.
If you are out running the race and get hurt and can’t communicate with us, I have no idea who you are, who to contact, etc.
Plus it has the potential to really screw up results.
The best thing to do is to get your refund if the race is full and have your friend just sign up for the race.
Thanks for being understanding!
I don’t do them….period…..don’t ask….I think they’re stupid…..everyone pays the same price unless you register late, then you’ll pay more than your buddy because you procrastinated.
We'll have a few aid stations set up for you. The first one will be at Elephant head, roughly 5.5 miles into the race. The next will be North Sentry. This one is just short of 14 miles, so almost 9 from Elephant Head. The next one is Nine Mile Gate, a bit over 20 miles in. You can have a drop bag here. The final aid station is Lower Frary at about 23 miles. After that it's the finish line. Stuff will be the typical ultra fare, junk food, water, sports drink of some sort, maybe some gels, fruit.
Stuff You Get
What do you get for running the race? Well, you get free entry on to the island. We'll toss in some sort of tech shirt with the really cool race logo on it. Last year we gave away a little statue to the top male and female. We'll have some random prizes to give away as well, like gift cards for Altra shoes. We'll also have some buffalo chili for runners and family (family costs a little bit extra, like $6 each). I'll also give away some lunch money to the winners.
So, everyone that finishes will get a nifty coffee mug as a small token of your awesome accomplishment. The overall male and female will get some sort of trophy as well as some lunch money and a certificate for a free pair of shoes from Altra.
You get your bib on the island this year. You'll get a generic pass when you check in at the gate, then you'll check in again at the race start to get your bib. This way I know exactly who's out on the course. If you carpool with your friends with the family planning coming out later, the family will have to pay the entrance fee. The park makes up these rules, not me.
Local time: 4:06 AM
Packet pickup will be Friday morning starting at 6am. It will be at the park entrance parking lot. There is no early packet pickup.
