Joe's Night Run At The Hamptons

Joe's Night Run At The Hamptons is an 11-hour night time endurance event held on the cart paths at the Hamptons Golf Course in Hampton, VA. There is also a 5 hour event starting at 7 pm, a 6 hour event starting at midnight, a 4.4 mile race, and a loop walking option.

October 8 - 7 pm to October 9 - 6 am

This is a "cart path only" event, meaning we'll be running only on the cart paths on a 4.4 mile loop.

It's an old school, low-key event. We'll have lap counters (you yell out your bib number, we write it down). We will have pre-packaged aid for runners. You will be able to crew directly out of your car.

This is an excellent event for those who have not run a night run before, as well as for veteran night-runners.

This event is named for the RD's father, who lost his brave four-year battle with brain and lung cancer August 1, 2021. Joe loved to golf and sparked his daughter's love of running. This is a special way to remember Joe was was a wonderful, amazing human being.

RACE OPTIONS - Read carefully before registering

About the endurance event itself

Parking & Set Up: Parking begins at 5 pm. Please do not arrive before that as this is an active golf course. You will be able to crew out of your car for the event.

Check In: 5:45 pm - 6:30 pm

Race starts: 7 pm (except for the 6 hour which begins at midnight - you can check in any time for the 6 hour).

You can run as much or as little as you want (because this is sponsored by Just A Training Run).

Temperature: Be prepared for the possibility of cooler temperatures. Running at night is always cooler than during the day. If this is your first night run please pack extra layers - it is better to have more and leave them in your car than not enough.

Runners are encouraged to have a hydration device (bottle, pack, etc...) for each loop. We will not have an aid station on the course, only at the lap check in.
Nutrition: We are only able to provide pre-packaged items only due to health code policies. Therefore we are not able to provide any soup or other warmed items. But - we will have a variety of goodies on hand. JATR likes to feed the runners well! We'll provide a list of aid station items as the race event nears.

The 4.4 mile loop is on the cart paths of The Hamptons Golf Course. The course will be marked with glow sticks, along with turn signs. Once the final course is routed we will provide a map of the course and the mileage.

Runners will be able to make one shorter loop (approx 2.4 miles) on their final lap. Those runners that need a few tenths of a mile to hit a milestone will be permitted to do so on a marked path. This does not have to be in the 5-6 am hour - runners may elect to finish earlier and needs to alert the lap counter that they will make the shorter route on their final lap. 5, 6, and 11 hour runners will be able to run a .5 mile out and back during their final hour of their race.

This is NOT a flat course. This is a fun, yet challenging course that involves small hills that will prove to be a good challenge as you move farther into the night. The cart path is enough to allow about 3 people to run next to each other.

The race will begin with a loop around a connecting parking lot in order to spread out the runners before transitioning to the cart path loops.

We are STRICTLY limited to only the cart paths - we cannot run on the grass at any time, even if passing someone. We are hoping to hold this event again so please help us by running only on the cart paths.

We'll have an award for the top 3 women and men for the 4.4 miler, 5 hour, 6 hour, and 11 hour. All finishers will receive a finisher's item and a hand branded wooden medal.

Mandatory Gear

Runners are required to have an illumination device on while running at all times. Please do not turn off your light as this is a requirement for the event to be conducted. There are some parts of the path that are bumpy - while some spots will be marked with a cone, some may not so please be aware that you should have a good light.

While not mandatory, please be sure that you bring warm clothing. There is nothing worse than being pulled from a race because it was warm enough at the start for shorts and a singlet, but at 2 am the RD pulls you because you are hypothermic. Don't do that.

Some more logistics

We will have portable restrooms rented for the event in the parking lot. There will be two portable restrooms available on course. This is a strictly portable restroom only event - there is no option to use the course like one might do in a mountain ultra.

This is a manual loop count event. You will run up to the count tent and call out your number. Details for logistics for counting laps will be included in your race brief email.

The course will be set up so you will have your lap counted and then you can go to your car to crew. The parking lot is small and you will not have to "go out of your way" to get to your car for crewing. We cannot allow tents in the parking lot. Please contact the race director for any specific set up questions.

Sweet Shirts

This year we'll have a shirt option and you can snag a sweet short-sleeve shirt from a small business vendor. Please add this at checkout - we'll need at least 20 to keep the pricing at the cost we have it for, so consider supporting a small business and order a cool shirt to represent your Just A Training Run adventure. The shirts will have the event logo printed on the front of the shirt with a tri-cotton blend (we anticipate that will be the fabric) and they will be available in women's and unisex sizes.

We are not able to provide refunds. If you do need to cancel please let the RD know and we can provide a partial credit for a future JATR event or you can donate your registration fee to the scholarship.
