SQUATCHAYANDA TRAIL FESTIVAL

We are so excited for the newest Trail Party on the Sassquad Calendar... The SQUATCHAYANDA TRAIL FESTIVAL! Join us at Wawayanda State Park in Hewitt, NJ on Saturday September 24, 2022 for a 50 miler, Marathon or 25K. Spoiler Alert: we are adding the first ever Sassquad 100 Miler to this Trail Party in 2023 (we anticipate the 2023 race date to be September 23). We are supporting our non-profit partner, Bigger Than The Trail with this Trail Party!

RACE DETAILS

The Squatchayanda Trail Festival is a Trail Party that is designed for both the Newbies and the Veterans. With around 100 feet of elevation gain per mile, this is a GREAT first 50 miler opportunity for the Newbies. 50 Milers have 15 hours! This Trail Party is hiker-friendly for the Marathon and 25K as the course closes at 10PM giving you a full 13 hours to complete the 26.2M or 25K (BTW 25K = 15.5 miles!). Any runner leaving the start/finish aid station after 2:50pm must carry their cellphone and headlamp with them. As always, our Trail Parties are always Family-Friendly (you can get a 15% discount when you register 3 or more family members; email us for the code: trailpartydirector@sassquadtrailrunning.com )

ALL 50 Milers are REQUIRED to have a headlamp and/or flashlight when they begin their second loop at mile 22 (it does not matter what time you are starting your second loop!). 50 Milers are strongly encouraged to bring an extra headlamp/flashlight and extra batteries. We will not have extra to give out and we cannot permit you to run if you do not have a light. Marathoners and 25Kers who anticipate finishing after 6PM are also required to have a headlamp with them. This is a cupless event; please bring a water bottle/cup.

Each runner will take home a unique finishers' item along with their handcrafted wood medal, and the top three male and female finishers for each distance will receive a special award.

YOU MUST ENTER THE PARK THROUGH THE MAIN ENTRANCE AT 885 WARWICK TURNPIKE, WHERE THE PARK OFFICE IS LOCATED. THE UTILITY ENTRANCE ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE PARK WILL NOT BE OPENED. IF YOU GO TO THAT ENTRANCE, IT WILL TAKE YOU AT LEAST 15 MINUTES TO GET TO THE MAIN PARK ENTRANCE ON WARWICK TURNPIKE! Please use THIS GPS LINK. When you get to the park, follow signs for "Wawayanda Beach". The start/finish will be at the beach.

"NATURE"

Welcome to Jurassic Park! JUST KIDDING! Wawayanda State Park is home to a variety of critters (thankfully, no dinos). So this is your "nature disclaimer". Yes, there are bugs at Wawayanda, we do recommend bringing bug spray with you. Yes, there are Black Bears at Wawayanda. Here is what ya need to do if you see a bear during the race (this is from the NJ Dept of Environmental Protection): If you see a bear, make it aware of your presence and use common sense. Never approach the animal; observe it only from a distance. Clapping, talking, singing or making other noise lets the bear know you are nearby. Remain standing, avoid direct eye contact, back up slowly and speak in a calm, assertive voice if you encounter a bear at close range. Do not run. For more information on Bear Encounters, check out this informational page from the NJDEP.

FAQ's

Q: Can I have a pacer?
A: No pacers.

Q: Can I bring my dog?
A: Sorry, but Spot has to stay at home for this race. Our liability insurance does not cover dogs at our events; thank you for understanding!

Q: Can I sign my kids up for this trail party?
A: Yes! We want the WHOLE family to come out to our events! We have a special discount code for families registering 3 or more Squatches in the same household. Please email us (trailpartydirector@sassquadtrailrunning.com) before you register so we can give you the code! Once you have the code, be sure to register your child separately. You may need to log out of your UltraSignUp account to register your child using a "guest" account". And make sure to keep track of Lex and Tim before during and after the race. We only have 1 search-party and they're already out there looking for Sasquatch.

Q: What's the weather like in Hewitt, NJ in September?
A: Hopefully we are going to have a nice fall day! But, it could be cold. Maybe. It could be warm. Check the weather before the race and dress appropriately. The zip code for the race is 07421.

Q: This will be my first trail race. What do I need to know?
A: We are SO EXCITED that you are choosing a Sassquad Trail Party for your first trail race! This is a great choice for your first race because these trails have a bit of everything! You'll run on easy carriage roads, just a little bit of technical singletracks and enjoy flat trails and rolling hilly trails. You're going to LOVE it!

Q: Are there any roads on the course?
A: Yes, all runners will complete the 4ish mile road lollipop to finish out their race. This is flat and there is a crushed-gravel sidewalk.

Q: What food will you have at the aid station?
A: We will have a wide variety of traditional ultra running food, as well as many vegan and gluten-free items. You are more than welcome to bring your own food/water and setup your own aid station in the parking lot and access it each time you come to the start/finish area (see above Course Description for Aid Station #1 locations)

Q: I could get lost in a brown paper bag. Will the course be marked?
A: We will have pink/red reflective colored ribbons along the course and plenty at all of the turns, along with large red directional arrows that have reflective tape on them.

Q: I don't want to run, are there any volunteer opportunities?
A: Yes! We always need Sassy Volunteers! Please email us at trailpartydirector@sassquadtrailrunning.com if you would like to volunteer!

Q: Are there restrooms at the start/finish area?
A: YES, there are real restrooms at the start/finish area. There is another restroom at Aid Station #2.

Q: I can't come to the race anymore, can I get a refund?
A: Unfortunately we do not offer refunds on the nonrefundable registration fee.

Q: My friend isn't registered for the race, but he's still planning on coming to run. He won't eat from the aid station or take a medal or swag. This is okay, right?
A: NO THIS IS NOT OKAY. This is called being a "race bandit" and it is stealing. Not paying for a race and running the race is stealing from the race organization (even if you're not taking food or swag). Don't do this at a Sassquad Trail Party or ANY other race. It's not okay. And if you hear about someone else doing this, call them out. If you bandit a race, you will be banned from registering for any of our Sassquad events.
