Race Overview
The La Ultra is run on a 333 Km stretch between the Start Point in the Nubra Valley in Ladakh, Jammu and Kashmir, India and the Morey Plains. Neither the Start or the End points have any significance. They are in the middle of nowhere. There are three race categories, the 111 Km Eleventy One, the 222 Km and the 333 Km.
The Start Point is in the Nubra Valley. All runners proceed to Khardung La, whose peak stands at about 17,700 feet (5,363 metres) through Khardung Village and North Pullu. From the Khardung La peak, they head down to Leh through South Pullu. The finish point for the 111 Km category is at Spituk, a few kilometres further ahead from Leh. From here, the 222 and 333 Km runners go up to Wari La (about 17,400 feet) after passing Karu, make a U-Turn and come back down the same party to Serthi. The 222 Km cut-off point is at Serthi.
The 333 Km runners continue on Tanglang La (about 17,400 feet), past Rumpste and then back down the other side to Morey Plains.
The La Ultra can provide a dramatic experience to runners because conditions are extreme. Temperatures can vary between -10°C and 40ºC. Oxygen levels can be as low as 40% of sea level. Runners will experience windy conditions and can expect rain, snow or ice at short notice.
Runners are requested to carefully review all the information provided for Runners before choosing to register for the La Ultra. We will make continuous updates to help participants prepare for this event.
The 111 and 222 Km course are part of the 333 Km course. Runners from all categories start simultaneously. The race is typically flagged off at 10 pm subject to local conditions. While there are some finer points including cut-offs, generally speaking, a runner gets 24 hours to complete each section of 111 Km.
