Description
WARNING. The Savage Gulf is extremely hard. Some call it the hardest marathon in the U.S. Every year we pull people off this course. Come trained, come prepared, and come with respect for the place.
The Cumberland Plateau cracks open into gorges, sandstone bluffs, and waterfalls that do not care about your finish time. The trail is a rock garden with a running problem. Come for the beauty. Stay because the rocks will not let you leave quickly.

Marathon Description
There is a reason spectators chant You Survived the Savage Gulf once you cross the line. This is one of the toughest marathons in the Southeast. The full tour of the gulf drops you into the prettiest and rockiest country the plateau has, twice, and asks you to climb back out both times.
Along the way: stone formations the size of houses, waterfalls, historic sites, wildflowers, old growth forest, several stream crossings, and a long run along the edge of the bluff. Finishing times run 4.5 to 8 hours. This is not your average trail run.
To enter the marathon you must have finished a marathon or longer race before. The Savage is not the place to find out how your first one goes.

25k and RUCK Description
All the beauty with a little less bruising. The 25K is a loop with a short out and back, starting 9:00 AM from the same start area as the marathon. You will reach Saw Mill, turn around, and come home by a different trail, with one sneaky turn a few miles later that loves to catch daydreamers. The Ruck 25K covers the same course under load.

HardRuck
The Rucking Division is back for each race. New to the idea? Rucking means covering the course with a weighted pack. The name comes from the military word Rucksack, meaning backpack. Same rocks, same views, extra pounds.
Weight requirements:
Over 150 lb: 20 lb dry weight
Under 150 lb: 10 lb dry weight
Weigh ins happen 30 minutes before the race start. No weigh in, no patch. The weight must be a steel ruck plate, weight vest blocks, bumper plates, or other items with clearly stamped weight. You may not remove or reduce the weight during the event, and random checks can happen at aid stations or anywhere on course. We rely on the honor system, so please do the right thing.

Safety Notice
For the safety of all runners the marathon has two hard cutoffs. Collins Gulf West at mile 11 closes at 12:00 PM, and the Saw Mill aid station at mile 18.1 closes at 1:30 PM. Runners who have not reached a cutoff in time will be located and escorted to the finish by race volunteers.
Every runner must carry a hydration container. The full race day rundown, including any weather gear requirements, goes out by email to registered runners the week of the race.
About The Park
Savage Gulf is a 14,357 acre State Natural Area that contains some of the most spectacular natural rock formations in Tennessee. Purchased by the state in 1973 to protect one of the last known stands of virgin timber in the Eastern United States, Savage Gulf has 55 miles of trails and ten primitive campsites. The Savage Gulf Ranger Station is the eastern access point to the Savage Gulf-Stone Door trail system that traverses the most rugged and scenic areas of the South Cumberland complex. The Stone Door Ranger Station is within the Savage Gulf area and is accessible off State Highway 56 near Beersheba Springs. It is named for the Great Stone Door, a 150-foot deep crevice at the crest of the Plateau. It is the western access for the Savage Gulf-Stone Door trails network.
