Coronavirus Update
March 30: 2020 RAN IT WITH JANET 50K AND TRAINING RUNS CANCELLED
Hello Magical Unicorn Runners!
Due to the continuing public health threat of coronavirus (COVID-19), race directors, Janet Choi Couto, Lucas Moten and Sean Cason have made the difficult decision to cancel the 2020 Ran it with Janet 50k. As you know, one of the goals of this race is to benefit the Embry Rucker Community Shelter operated by Cornerstones in Reston, VA. The Embry Rucker Community Shelter (ERCS) is a 70-bed residential shelter that provides healthy, safe, emergency housing for individuals and families. During this time of economic and health crisis, they are anticipating a higher than normal demand for their emergency food and shelter services as children are out of school and in need of meals typically covered by school meal programs. Adults who work hourly jobs and may be off from work will also be adversely affected. Seniors may be in greater need as they are shut off from family members and other usual resources. Therefore, 100% of your entry fees will be donated to Cornerstones and those of you who have already entered will have priority for next year’s race. The waiting list will remain the same. If you do not wish to run next year, please let us know as we have limited spots.
If you are fortunate enough and able, please consider additional tax deductible financial donations to assist your neighbors in need during this time. https://www.cornerstonesva.org/ranitwithjanet/ This “ friendraiser” is up and running and they need your support more than ever. In addition to donating financially, there is also a Wish List of goods that the shelter is always in need of. However, due to the social distancing measures currently in place, it would be best to donate directly through the friendraiser link and not worry about virus transmission during drop off. We can do that next year as we have always done.
We thank you for your generosity and kindness since we have started running this race since 2015. You are our community’s heroes especially during this difficult time. Not only do we have such a wonderful time every National Trail Day running through the woods with our friends, you make a huge contribution financially and in morale to our community. We hope you all remain safe and healthy and we look forward to gathering with you at Manassas Battlefield Park in June 2021.
Sincerely,
Janet Choi Couto
Lucas Moten
Sean Cason
March 21: We are sad to report that the first training run scheduled on April 11 has been cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic. We have not yet determined what will happen with each of the other training runs or the race itself, but anticipate rolling cancellations as this event unfolds. Please help each other and neighbors and consider making a tax deductible donation directly through the Cornerstones donation page. If the worst case scenario happens as we cancel the race and you've made a contribution, we will personally send you this years wine glass.
About the event
The Ran It With Janet 50K is an annual event that takes place on National Trails Day, the first Saturday in June. The event is intended primarily as a fatass/fun-run style event with a goal of raising funds and gathering supplies to benefit the Embry Rucker Community Shelter of Reston, VA. The course starts and finishes from the Brownsville Picnic Area pavilion on the western side of Manassas National Battlefield Park of Manassas, VA. Consisting of three loops on a variety of surface including pavement, dirt, fire road cleared trail, gravel, and mowed back access roads, elevation is fairly flat at under 600 feet per loop making it a great 50K for first timers and those transitioning to trail from typical road marathons. In addition to aid available at the start/finish area, there are two aid stations located at Stone Bridge just over 4 miles into a loop, and the Unfinished Railroad at 7.5 miles.
Embry Rucker Community Shelter
Operated by Cornerstones, the Embry Rucker Community Shelter (ERCS) is a residential shelter providing healthy, safe, emergency housing for families and single men and women. Cornerstones is dediated to helping their clients overcome the circumstances that led to their homelessness and facilitate their transition to stable housing.
More information about the shelter can be found here.
The Ran It With Janet 50K seeks to raise awareness of homelessness, and raise funds to be directed to Cornerstones to help this great organization provide relief to those in need of assistance. In addition to registering for the event here on Ultra-Signup, please consider a direct donation to ERCS.
Some other ways you can help Cornerstones and the Shelter
Start / Finish Area
The start and finish of the Ran It With Janet 50K is the Brownsville Picnic Area on the west side of the Manassas National Battlefield Park. Accessible from Groveton road, this spacious area provides for ample parking, has a pavilion, and bathroom facilities.
Course Map
A map of the course with mile markers, points of interest for bearings, and approximate elevation profile are shown below.
The start and finish is at the Brownsville Picnic Area. The course progresses in a counter-clockwise direction. Miles 1 through 8 follow the outer perimiter portions of the First and Second Manassas Trails. Aid Stations will be setup at approximately..
- Miles 0/10.5/21 - Start/Finish
- Miles 4.5/15.1/25.6 - Stone Bridge
- Miles 7.9/18.4/28.9 - Unfinished Railroad
The course will be marked with ground signage indicating if you are to turn left, turn right, or continue proceeding ahead at least once per half mile. If you are not familiar with the trails at Manassas National Battlefield Park, consider joining us for one or more of the planned training runs!
Training Runs
All training runs meet at the Brownsville Picnic Area at 8:00 AM. This is an excellent way to familiarize yourself with the course, and run with a group at a relaxed pace. And if you've never been to the Manassas Battlefield before, this is also a great time to read the placards along the trail that provide historical reference of events during the early stages of the civil war. Water will be put out at the aid station locations.
- Saturday, April 11 (Weekend nearest National Unicorn Day of April 9 is always our kickoff). This training run has been cancelled due to the sars-cov-2 pandemic
- April 25 - 6 weeks before the event. Good time for a 20 miler for those so inclined!
- May 9 - about 4 weeks before the event. Another ideal time for a 20 miler
- May 23 - 2 weeks before the event.
These are rain or shine training runs. Because running in a pack is always funner then running alone on a treadmill.
Stay tuned to the Facebook page for further details about the training events and options. We will update for next event starting in January!
