Run or Hike to Save DeLeo Wall on Cougar Mountain

Help us conserve DeLeo Wall. This forested hillside on the south side of Cougar Mountain is being considered for logging and development. The City of Newcastle has requested community support to fund a full appraisal of the DeLeo Wall property. The appraisal will enable the requesting of additional grants and making a fair market offer for purchase of the property, securing it for hiking and enjoyment for future generations.

If you would like to contribute an additional donation to the De Leo Wall appraisal you may due so at this webpage: https://forterra.org/give-deleo-wall

Additionally, Eva Lundahl and the Save DeLeo Wall Campaign will have a table set up at the start finish area with flyers, t-shirts, and donation information as well.

Course Description

4.7 miles with 819 vertical feet of elevation gain.

The course begins from the Redtown trailhead on Cougar Mountain and then follows the wide China Creek trail up to the Wildside trail. From the Wildside trail the route continues to gradually ascend to the Marshall Hill trail. From there the route switchbacks up the hillside. Eventually, the trail intersects with the viewpoint trail and becomes quite narrow. This is the section of the course that could potentially be logged. From this trail there are views of Rainier and the valley below. Additionally, there are beautiful Madrones overhanging the steep cliffside below the trail.

The route then takes a sudden turn back into the coniferous forest and the terrain becomes quite steep. Follow this narrow trail back onto the De Leo Wall trail and then begin the long descent back to the valley below. From this point follow Indian trail back over to the Redtown trail and enjoy some flat fast miles on a wide gravel path. The race finishes up back at the Redtown trailhead.
