One Dam Good Trail Race
Along the pine-lined shores of Quemahoning Reservoir, a trail race waits that perfectly blends beauty, grit, and grassroots spirit. The name Quemahoning (pronounced Kwee-ma-hone-ing) comes from a Delaware Native American phrase meaning “a lick in the pines”—a place where water springs from the earth near towering pine trees. Today, that same landscape sets the stage for one of Pennsylvania’s most joyful trail running gatherings: The On the Dam Trail Race.
This event gives you a half dozen ways to take it on.
The signature 50K tackles two full loops around the reservoir and dam. Go solo if you’re feeling bold, or recruit your trail crew and conquer it as a relay team of two or four. Share the miles, share the suffering, and share the glory.
Looking for something shorter but still packed with adventure?
30K – A rolling forest chase around the reservoir
10K – A quick-and-dirty blast through the pines
All races begin at Camp Harmony, a serene woodland retreat that serves as race headquarters, packet pickup, and the start/finish celebration zone. From there you’ll disappear into the forests of the Laurel Highlands and Somerset County—a region sometimes called “America's County” for its deep historical and cultural roots.
The course itself is pure trail-runner bliss:
Buttery singletrack weaving through thick pine stands
Rolling hills and shaded valleys
Occasional rocky stretches to keep you honest
A few friendly stream crossings
Soft forest floors where every footfall feels...
It’s the kind of place that reminds you why you run trails in the first place.
For the full 50K, expect about 3,100 feet of elevation gain across two laps. Well-stocked aid stations and relay exchange points keep runners fueled and supported along the way.
Race day check-in begins 7:00 AM, with the start at 8:00 AM.
And when the miles are done, the celebration begins. Camp Harmony hosts a post-race bonfire and campfire-style feast, giving runners the chance to relax, swap stories, and celebrate the day’s effort under the trees.
Want to make a weekend of it?
Stay onsite Friday night with tent camping or rustic cabins just 100 yards from the start line. Crawl out of bed, lace up your shoes, and you’re ready to run. Afterward, onsite shower facilities mean you won’t have to ride home covered in trail dust.
Even better, your miles support a meaningful cause. Race proceeds help local children attend Camp Harmony church camps, while also supporting the Johnstown Running Club’s grassroots mission to grow running and outdoor recreation throughout the region.
Quemahoning Reservoir was originally built to power the steel mills of Johnstown’s industrial past.
Today, it powers your passion for wild places, hard miles, and the simple joy of trail running. 🌲🏃♂️
