Description

This is a FAT ASS style event with NO entry fee, no course markings and some aid. The course will NOT be marked, but participants will have Garmin & GAIA GPX coordinates available. The trails are generally well marked at each intersection. Participants will self-time their run. Start time will be 6:30 a.m. sharp! Lost Dog Trailhead will open at 6:07 a.m. so it will be light enough to run without a headlamp.

This run is limited to 55 runners. There is ZERO fee for this fun run. Wow, an actual marathon that’s FREE!

Course

The looped course will take you throughout the beautiful Sonoran Desert in the McDowell Mountain Preserves, starting and finishing at the Lost Dog Trailhead. The trails are rocky and often run-on technical terrain. About 5,000+ feet of elevation gain. There is very minimal shade, and most of the time you will be exposed with zero shade, so be prepared if the weather is warm.

Aid

I plan to have aid at Adero Canyon and Gateway Trailhead with water, electrolyte and snacks. There will be a water fountain at Sunrise Trailhead 4.75 miles, Adero Trailhead 10 miles and Gateway Trailhead 20.5 miles. There will be restrooms at Lost Dog, Adero and Gateway Trailhead. Other than that, you should carry all your calories and water at ALL times with you. Due to the distance between water and aid, it is recommended that you run with a hydration vest with a FULL liter or 1.5-liter of water. This is a run in the Fat Ass tradition - YOU are responsible for your own well-being. You are allowed crew access at the trailhead listed above.

Finish Line

Since it’s St Patrick’s Day weekend, if anyone is interested, we can plan on gathering at a local bar/pub nearby after the event to celebrate all the runners who participated and crossed the finish line!
