Description
NOTICE: Thanks to the efforts of many volunteers, the course is cleared for use and the races will go on as scheduled.
The New Years Resolution Runs have become Lake Rhodhiss Trailfest!
To avoid the post-Christmas travel conflicts and potential weather issues, we've moved our trail races into October, where we hope to welcome you with cool, dry, and beautiful conditions on the trails of Valdese Lakeside Park. So, what's different? What's the same?
LRT is definitely version 2.0 of the NYRR events as we're not only changing the courses (slightly for the fun run) but also adding a ten miler for those of you who just can't get enough of the Valdese Lakeside Park trail network! The courses are mostly new and almost all trail, taking advantage of the recently opened multi-use/bike trail. The 5K will use roughly the first 1/3 of the new trail while the 10K and 10-miler will experience all of the multi-use/bike trail. Note that the 5K will be a bit longer than 3.1 miles and you may not get exactly 6.2 or 10.0 miles with the other courses. No matter which event you select, you can expect rolling hills, plenty of roots and rocks, and a challenging event.
Lake Rhodhiss Trailfest will unofficially serve as an opening act for the following weekend's Great Trails State Day events at Valdese Lakeside Park, where Friends of the Valdese Rec is challenging all park visitors to accumulate a combined 2,000 miles of hiking, running, biking, paddling, etc... on that single Saturday.)
So, for those of you unfamiliar with the park, expect mostly single track with varying degrees of roots and rocks, along with more hills than you might expect. For those of you who have participated in the New Year's races, we are not using the Tributary (orange) trail for these races as heavy rains have really made parts of it less like a trail and more like a dried creek bed.
Stay tuned for more details, including course maps and other helpful information.
