Bariloche - Hut to Hut Trek Through the Breathtaking Patagonian Wilderness
The picturesque city of Bariloche is nestled along the pristine shores of the expansive Nahuel Huapi Lake. This stunning location provides an awe-inspiring backdrop dominated by the majestic Andes Mountains, whose snow-capped peaks and rugged terrain add to the city’s natural splendor.
Bariloche is renowned for its distinctive Swiss-alpine architectural style, characterized by charming wooden chalets, steeply pitched roofs, and intricate stonework. This unique architectural heritage reflects the influence of early European settlers, particularly those from Switzerland, who left an indelible mark on the city’s cultural and architectural landscape. As a result, Bariloche exudes a quaint, old-world charm that seamlessly blends with its breathtaking natural surroundings, making it a beloved destination for travelers seeking both adventure and tranquility.
During this unforgettable adventure, we’ll begin by settling into our private home base in Bariloche. From there, we’ll explore the vibrant mountain town, soak in the local culture, and gear up for an epic multi-day hut-to-hut trek through the breathtaking Patagonian wilderness. After days on the trail, we’ll return to our cozy home to rest, recharge, and celebrate the journey together.
When: 2/14/26 - 2/20/26 - 6 days
Where: Bariloche, Argentina
Why: Because it is the trip of a lifetime
Type of Trip: A little bit of running but mostly guided hiking
Difficulty:
This trip is challenging for most participants. While the daily distances may seem short, especially to experienced ultra runners, the terrain is rugged and will keep you fully engaged each day.
Last year we had a few hikers with limited experience, and they made it through just fine thanks to their incredible attitudes and strong determination. That said, we take safety seriously.
This year, guides will be evaluating each participant throughout the trip to ensure everyone is prepared for the final day, which involves more exposure and risk. If someone isn't ready for that section, there will be a safer alternate route to reach the final shelter. The guides will make the final decision based on each participant’s readiness.
Terrain Type: Forrest, steep mountain climbs, snow fields, all types of rocks but a lot of loose rock.
DAY BY DAY INFO
We will give out exact details and all map information once you have signed up. Here is a general layout of the trip.
Day 1: Arrival & Acclimatization
We’ll meet in Bariloche and head to our private base house. The day is all about settling in, meeting the team, organizing gear, and preparing mentally and physically for the days ahead.
Day 2: Local Exploration & Prep Hike
We’ll explore some of the area’s beautiful trails and lakes while fine-tuning gear, testing pacing, and reviewing safety protocols. This day offers a mix of movement and rest before the bigger push.
Days 3–5: Multi-Day Hut-to-Hut Trekking
This is the heart of the adventure—a rugged, scenic, and demanding multi-day traverse through the Patagonian backcountry. We’ll hike from hut to hut, navigating technical terrain, alpine passes, and remote valleys. Expect long days, epic views, and shared effort. Our nights will be spent in remote refugios with the support of local guides and John Hardin.
Day 5 - We will return and rest mid afternoon
Day 6: Fly Back
We’ll make our way back to the home base, clean up, and enjoy a well-earned recovery evening with good food, a warm bed, and stories from the trail.
Questions
What is the Weather Like? Daily high temperatures decrease by 2°F, from 71°F to 69°F, rarely falling below 58°F or exceeding 83°F. The highest daily average high temperature is 71°F on February 1.Daily low temperatures decrease by 2°F, from 46°F to 44°F, rarely falling below 35°F or exceeding 55°F. Temps in the mountains can change dramatically from the temps above and are typically cooler. For me at night a puffy or R1 Hoodie with a Houdini is a must. Also gloves and pants are nice. Keep in mind we will be in shelters that are insulated but the mornings will be brisk to say the least.
What is the Group Size? - 6-10.
Do we tip for this event? That would be great but only if we do a good job. Typical tip is $25 per day.
Do you have medical equipment with you? We have minimal medical gear on the trails, but there is better medical gear at the shelters. If it is an emergency, a rescue will take place. If you are prone to minor injuries, be sure to bring along what is needed.
Is Bariloche Safe? - It is very safe
Is This Trip Right for Everyone? Participation in this trip requires a foundation of endurance. Speed is not the primary concern; rather, it’s your ability to sustain effort over consecutive days. Building this kind of endurance is essential for safety in mountainous terrain, where the challenges include not only the daily distances but also the cumulative effects of climbing and descending loose rocks. The distances each day are not that high based on ultra running standards but accent/descents can be demanding on your legs, which need to be well-prepared. I do not recommend this trip to someone who is not regularly on trails. If you’re looking for guidance on how to train or simply wish to refine your mountain skills, feel free to reach out via email. I’m here to provide support and advice to ensure you’re ready for this adventure.
Do we need to do the full distances each day? The first and second day you do not need to do the full distance. The rest of the days you must complete the full distance.
What do I need to come? All participants must possess a passport valid for at least six months. Citizens of the US, Canada, the UK, and the EU do not require visas. You will need all the required gear and trip medical and cancelation insurance. This is typically around $150

About HardWin
My name is John Hardin, and I’m the founder of HardWin Adventures, an established outdoor event company based in the Nashville, TN area. HardWin has a rich history of orchestrating a variety of outdoor events and local outings, leveraging my 20 years of expertise in the event production field. While running vacations abroad are a newer endeavor, organizing adventures is what I excel at.
Beyond HardWin, I’ve accomplished and also failed on numerous ambitious Fastest Known Times (FKTs), including a notable recent attempt at the Appalachian Trail FKT. During this attempt, I maintained a record pace for 779 miles until a minor quad tear curtailed my progress. The footage featured on the Maine Event vacation page highlights parts of this journey. I’m always pushing the boundaries for myself when time permits. I am equally passionate about outdoor adventures and deeply committed to the running community, always striving to enhance and expand it.
