Extremus presented by The Endurance Society
Welcome to Extremus presented by The Endurance Society, a long‑distance winter point‑to‑point trek through the spectacular Adirondack wilderness known this year as the Great Range Traverse. Over 24 miles of snow, ice, rock, and wind, this course traverses remote backcountry terrain that challenges both body and mind.
The course features approximately 10,000 feet of total elevation change. Adirondack alpine terrain with varied surfaces including snow, ice, and technical rock sections.
This is a remote wilderness experience.Participants should be prepared for a full day in winter conditions with variable weather and temperatures.
This is an alpine style group trek and NOT a race.

Shuttle service to trailhead at the start. Shuttle service when your day is complete (from trail to hostel). Lodging is not included! There are options:
- Bunks available at TMax-n-Topo, 5046 Cascade Road, Lake Placid, NY 12946 (on-site group lodging)
- TMax Hostel will serve as the host location and there are 24 bunks ($32 per night) which are first come first serve and YOU MUST RESERVE ONLINE. Private rooms across the street at Cascade hotel
- Numerous other lodging choices in Lake Placid, NY
. LODGING IS NOT INCLUDED IN YOUR ENTRY FEE.
What Equipment Do I Need?
This is a self-supported winter trek. Your pack should start under 30 lbs—half of that will be food and water. Overloading slows you down and increases risk of fatigue, exposure, and injury. Choose gear carefully, and layer smartly. Avoid cotton and overdressing—sweat can become dangerous in winter cold.
You don’t need to spend big on fancy gear, but the basics matter for safety. Required and optional gear is listed below, including shared group items.
Individual Gear (Required)
- Backpack
- Insulated, waterproof boots
- Gaiters
- Microspikes or crampons
- Snowshoes
- Water bottles or hydration system
- Goggles
- Headlamp + extra batteries
- Toilet paper
- Hand warmers
- Insulated gloves or mittens
- Wool/synthetic socks (extras)
- Beanie or warm hat (extras)
- Neck gaiter or ski mask
- Mid-layer (fleece, etc.)
- Insulated top layer (puffy or wool)
- Shell jacket and pants
- Phone (photos/emergencies) – store support team numbers

- Anti-chafing balm
- Foot care/blister kit

- Mountaineering axe (if needed)
Group Gear (Shared/Provided)
- Radio (assigned to subgroup leads – Channel 1)
